The first fact one needs to know about the Harry Allen-Joe Cohn Quartet is that it is, as described in the liner notes, a "working band." This may sound like a negligible fact on Hey, Look Me Over, but it isn't. A number of famous combos in the history of jazz have only played together in the studio. Here, however, guitarist Cohn, tenor Allen, bassist Joel Forbes, and drummer Chuck Riggs have developed the synchronicity that only comes from performing together night after night. For Hey, Look Me Over, that equals an hour of lovely ensemble work highlighted by some well-wrought guitar and tenor workouts on a solid set list. The next thing one would want to know about the Harry Allen-Joe Cohn Quartet is that they play traditional mainstream jazz with such pizzazz that one would never mistake it for regurgitated classics. With two or three exceptions, this is an upbeat, happening set, with vibrant versions of Charlie Christian-Benny Goodman's "Seven Come Eleven" and the title cut. "Seven Come Eleven," in particular, is a six-minute free-for-all, with superb back-and-forth exchanges between Cohn and Allen played against Forbes' busy bassline and Riggs' frantic backbeat. Hey, Look Me Over is the kind of tuneful, well-executed album that makes the listener feel good. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Hey, Look Me Over album
$12.29 Conte Candoli (trumpet); Victor Feldman (vibraphone); Emil Richards (marimba); Keith Mitchell (bass); Earl Palmer, Stan Levey (drums).
Originally released on Reprise (6019), Reprise (6049) & Reprise (6073).
This double CD is more about Barney Kessel the studio player than Kessel the jazz guitar legend. Still, this compilation of three LPs originally released between 1961-1963 has some good music, and Kessel the jazz man is not entirely absent, even though the settings do not call for him to stretch out.
Breakfast at Tiffany's is Kessel's handling of Henry Mancini's music from the classic ...

| | Phil Woods American Songbook CD (2006)
Hey, Look Me Over CD music
$14.35 Phil Woods, the great American saxophonist, has been featured in more diverse settings than almost anyone in the history of the music. His constant challenging of himself as a player, bandleader, and composer has been admirable since his debut set as a leader. While standards sets these days are not only a dime a dozen but mostly cop-outs from established artists and newcomers who either lost or never had the chops to execute them with any aesthetic imprint, let alone the one they deserve, septuagenarian Woods breathes life into ten of these tunes, and reinvents them both as harmonic structures and as tools for swing. With trumpeter Brian Lynch, pianist Bill Charlap (a fine leader in his own right), bassist Steve Gilmore, and Billy Goodwin on drums, Woods takes on "Foggy Day" as if it were a new tune. The same goes for the age-old jazz ballad of choice "All the Things You Are," on which Charlap sets the course for a wondrous take with the ensemble playing together as if they ...
| | Night Of Chesky Jazz Live At Town Hall: JVC Jazz Festival CD (1992)
Hey, Look Me Over music CDs
$15.89 All of the music on this CD comes from the June 24, 1992, concert at Town Hall in New York City, with a host of artists each being featured. Trumpeter Tom Harrell leads off with two fine originals, the turbulent "Journey to the Center" and the mellow but swinging "Weaver." His very strong supporting cast includes ex-boss Phil Woods on alto sax, tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, and pianist Jim McNeely, as well as bassist Peter Washington and drummer Bill Goodwin. Pianist Fred Hersch is next, beginning with a dazzling trio arrangement of Brazilian composer Egberto Gismonti's "Nostalgia," with some superb arco cello by Erik Friedlander and powerful percussion from Tom Rainey. A captivating medley of two Hersch originals, "Child's Song" and "Forward Motion," and the humorous (and well-named) "Nostalgia," adding saxophonist Rich Perry, ...
| | George Gee Swingin' Away CD (2000)
Hey, Look Me Over songs
$12.89 Recorded live at Roseland Ballroom, New York, New York on May 26, 1999.
George Gee leads a solid, second-level big band in the New York area that was helped along by the popularity of retro-swing in the mid- to late '90s. At this live concert, Gee's orchestra, along with Count Basie's orchestra, helped celebrate the 85th birthday of famous dancer Frankie Manning at the Roseland Ballroom. Oddly enough, many of the songs that Gee's band plays are associated with Basie (including "Blues for Stephanie," "Smack Dab in the Middle," "Basie Boogie," "Blues in Hoss' Flat," and "Everyday I Have the Blues") despite the fact that the Basie band would soon be performing. The ...
