Personnel: Brian Bromberg (whistling, acoustic bass); Brian Bromberg; Randy Waldman (piano); Vinnie Colaiuta (drums). Audio Mixers: Brian Bromberg; Tom McCauley. Recording information: B2 Studios, Los Angeles, CA; Castle Oaks Studios, Los Angeles, CA. Photographers: Nicholas Belton; Michel Bocande. Arranger: Brian Bromberg. The follow-up both to 2002's Wood and 2005's thematically opposite Metal, Wood II puts jazz bassist Brian Bromberg in an acoustic small-combo format supported by a drummer and pianist. Bromberg's full, rounded tone is at the center of all of these 12 songs; on some, like his cover of Earth, Wind & Fire's funk hit "Shining Star," he uses his trademark tapping technique to play two simultaneous lines. This low-end focus makes Wood II a delight for standup bass fanatics, but for others, the idea of solo bass performances of Kansas' mildly insufferable classic rock radio staple "Carry on Wayward Son" or Paul McCartney's ultra-twee hit "Let 'Em In" will be too much to contemplate. ~ Stewart Mason The follow-up both to 2002's Wood and 2005's thematically opposite Metal, Wood II puts jazz bassist Brian Bromberg in an acoustic small-combo format supported by a drummer and pianist. Wood II
$12.95 Personnel: Kawabata Makoto (vocals, bouzouki, lyra, oud, violin); Ginestet Audrey (vocals). The first volume of Japanese über guitarist Kawabata Makoto's Inui set the pace for all of his multi-instrumental improvisational recordings to follow. Here, Makoto plays violin, sarangi, oud, bowed sitar, bouzouki, lyra, shou, nei, and he sings -- or at least uses his voice as another musical instrument. On three long tracks, including the truly magical "Son," which covers all of side two, Makoto explores the notions of just intonation in much the same way La Monte Young did under the tutelage of Pandit Pran Nath ...
