This rare album from singer/pianist Tânia Maria, backed by bassist Hélio and drummer Boto, documents that in the mid-'70s, the swinging samba-jazz interpreter was already developed -- even if still closely emulating Elis Regina. The album opens with the heavy pounding of "Samba de Orly" (Vinícius de Moraes/Chico Buarque de Hollanda), and the same atmosphere follows with a Jorge Ben medley, giving room to the lyrical "Até Quem Sabe" (Lysias Enio/Joao Donato). "Abre Alas" traces very closely Elis Regina's take. Another Ben classic, "Fio Maravilha" (which was written in homage to the celebrated soccer player Fio, from Botafogo, who later sued Ben for using his name, which is the reason why this song is currently interpreted as "Filho Maravilha") restores that heavy swing. "Aguas de Março" (Tom Jobim), in which a mild samba arrangement (as opposed to the usual bossa nova rendition) backs her interpretation, is profoundly indebted to Elis Regina. Another sensitive moment is brought by "Nao Tem Perdao" (Ronaldo Monteiro de Souza/Ivan Lins), the vehicle for one of her solos coupling the piano with her voice. The album closes with a medley of "Nao Poe a Mao" (Péricles Simoes Mutt/Arnô Canegal/B. Moreira), "Arrasta a Sandália" (Osvaldo Vasques/Aurélio Gomes), "Aquarela do Brasil" (Ary Barroso), the marchinha "Nega do Cabelo Duro" (Rubens Soares/David Nasser), "Maracangalha" (Dorival Caymmi), all transformed into a heavy samba. An appealing record for samba-jazz and Tânia Maria fans. ~ Alvaro NederJazzTimes (p.132) - "Tania Maria graces us with a fabulously energetic and raw collection of exquisite tunes and gives her talented all to every one." $28.69 For those new to the music of Tony Bennett, Improv was a label started by Tony Bennett and businessman Bill Hassett. Bennett was fed up with the suits at Columbia Records, who were trying to make him sing rock & roll. When his contract expired at the beginning of the 1970s, he and Hassett formed a label to help him realize his aesthetic ambitions, and Improv was born. Bennett recorded five albums for the label between 1975 and 1977 before it went bankrupt. These recordings may not have sold well -- due largely to distribution problems -- but all of them were critically acclaimed. On these sides, Bennett is in awesome company throughout, with talent ranging from Bill Evans and Earl Hines to Ruby Braff to Marian McPartland to Buddy Tate and Charlie Byrd. The albums included here are Tony Bennett Sings 10 Rodgers and Hart Songs, Tony Bennett Sings More Great Rodgers & Hart, Tony Bennett and Bill Evans Together Again (this was the follow-up to the Fantasy ...

$24.95 Midnight Choir's second album was also the first produced by the Walkabouts' Chris Eckman, who would become the group's mentor and biggest booster through the '90s and beyond, helping to bring the quartet to wider attention through Europe and from there the rest of the world. His production on Olsen's Lot readily brought out the passionate drama of Midnight Choir, with plenty of dark shadows drawing on the same sources as Eckman's music, whether it be the murder ballads of past America, Leonard Cohen's haunted anti-mainstream MOR, Lee Hazlewood's self-consciously rich and ironic albums, or the post-goth power of solo Nick Cave. Paal Flaata's singing right from the start aims for a commanding presence, but thankfully it never goes too over-the-top -- there's an audible catch and twang in his voice on songs like "Sister of Mercy" and "Heavy Rain" that favorably suggests fellow neo-traditionalist Chris Isaak. Flaata brings a ready command to the songs, all written by multi-instrumentalist Al DeLoner, whose performance on guitar and keyboards throughout emphasizes aiming for just the right killer touch without worrying about overt flash. Check his fine efforts on "My Masquerade" or "Sailing Dark Waters" for plenty of ...
