| | Intocable Crossroads CD (2006) With DVD
Relaciones Conflictivas CD music
$9.95 CROSSROADS was nominated for the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Norteno Album.
With a dozen years logged, every one of them spent pushing the boundaries and expanding the realm of the acceptable in regional Mexican music, Intocable offer up perhaps their most adventurous effort yet. Crossroads is a genuine convergence of disparate musical influences, both Latin and not. In addition to ranchera, norteño, cumbia, and other standard Intocable fare, there are strong veins of country running throughout the record. Produced by Dixie Chicks veteran Lloyd Maines (father of frontwoman Natalie Maines), Crossroads is adorned in country grace on "Vuelve Mi Amor" and flaunts a bit of honky tonk on the single "Por Ella." Producer Junior Cabral adds unique flavor with mandolin and banjo, more influences that are seldom heard on Mexican radio. In an era when norteño continues to stagnate with record sales tapering off, yesterday's heroes playing smaller venues, and huge numbers of knockoff groups glutting the market with disappointingly uncreative material, Intocable continue to raise the bar. Receiving accolades from critics and fellow musicians alike, Crossroads is the finest ...
| | Costumbre Entregame CD (2006)
Relaciones Conflictivas music CDs
$11.09 After recording for Hollywood and WEA International, la Costumbre moved to Fonovisa with 2006's Entregame. Sometimes, switching labels can signal a change of direction for a group; the A&R folks at the new label might have something different in mind than the A&R folks at the old label. But Entregame is not a radical departure for Costumbre, who continue to provide romantic, good-natured Mexican pop that is norteño-minded but is not norteño in the purist sense. Entregame is not hardcore norteño in the way that los Huracanes del Norte, los Tigres del Norte, los Tucanes de Tijuana and los Rieleros del Norte are hardcore norteño; rather, Costumbre mixes norteño elements (including a prominent norteño-style accordion) with Latin pop in a crossover fashion that is comparable to the way a Dominican crossover artist might use bachata elements for pop purposes or a Spanish crossover artist might put a very pop-minded spin on flamenco. Some will describe Entregame as Tejano; others may call it ...

| | Karaoke Ta Lam CD (1993) (Import) Reissued; Canada
Relaciones Conflictivas album
$11.49 Reed and woodwind genius Gebhard Ullmann has moved outside of his own range on Tá Lam, and created a largely solo work for expressing himself not only as a composer, but as a soloist and improviser as well. Tá Lam is a single work in 13 sections. Different families of instruments are utilized, from piccolos to bass clarinets and the entire range of the saxophone family. The harmonic rigors of this work alone are staggering in their complexitiy and deftness of articulation. Ullmann has created a tightrope between the spheres of heaven and earth that are tonality and non-tonality (there is nothing atonal here). His notions of melodic harmonizing between groups or instruments are extremely complex and demanding, but played with an ease of spirit, a comfort with the sonic architecture he has created. Hans Hassler is not a collaborator on every piece, but he is essential to the places he does appear, creating a wider color palette of chords and interludes of density where space seems to predominate. A poetic chromaticism can be heard in the cracks and seams and a surreal, dreamlike quality is in place in the openly expressionistic passages. This record walks the line between jazz and new music without caring which way it falls. Gebhard Ullmann has given listeners a work to ponder for decades to come and the finest moment of his career thus far. ~ Thom Jurek
The back of the CD describes this as "echoes of tango, pygmy chants, township jive, gagaku but file under jazz for the solos." Firmly entrenched in the avant-garde, this is a reissue compilation from two earlier recordings released in Germany. Several of the tracks feature versatile saxophonist Gerhard Ullman overdubbed up to sixteen times in duo with accordionist Hans Hassler, while six reeds are added for the other cuts. The most interesting piece is the reworking of "Mack the Knife," which alone is worth the price of the CD. The leader composed the remaining tunes, which stress densely layered sounds, interspersed with plenty of fine improvisations. Hassler is particularly effective on accordion, but the limited tonal ...
