$15.75 Adrian and Paul Gurvitz might be better known for their travels with Ginger Baker in the Baker Gurvitz Army, but in the late '60s the brothers helmed the heavy rock trio Gun and caught a whiff of success in the U.K. with their debut single "Race with the Devil." Using the less-ethnic surname Curtis, Adrian (guitar) and Paul (bass) teamed up with drummer Louis Farrell and pounded out some distinctive psych-flavored proto-metal. Floating about in the mix along with the guitar pyrotechnics and drum workouts are brass and string sections that aren't always welcome, but "Race with the Devil" uses these potentially square instruments well, adding texture to an otherwise brutal stomp. "Yellow Cab Man" is the highlight of the set, a hard pop number with a buzzing guitar hook and frantic, heavily distorted soloing from Adrian. The obligatory freak-out comes with the finale, the 11-minute "Take Off" which begins with the sound of jet roar, then explodes into feedback, drum solos, backward guitars, and silly psychedelic exhortations to "take a deep breath and try to count to five." Elsewhere are half-baked ...
| | Save The Last Dance For Me/The Good Life With The Drifters CDs (2000)
El Maestro songs
$10.59 This single-disc reissue CD contains two classic albums by the Drifters, 1962's DAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME and 1965's THE GOOD LIFE WITH THE DRIFTERS. That second album title is indicative, because the polished, warm sound of the Drifters' smooth harmonies were 1960s at its most ultra-civilized, more in keeping with the supper club than the roadhouse. SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME, of course, contains the classic single of the same name, one of the Drifters' most beloved hits. ...
| | Papa Noel Bel Ami CD (2000)
El Maestro album
$16.85 Of the many Congolese guitarists, there are three that form a triumvirate: Nico, Franco, and Papa Noel. This excellent sample of his work is taken from the 1984 Bon Samaritain and the 1994 Haute Tension. The first musical influence on the young Noel were Cuban sones. At about the same time during his early youth, the first Congolese rumbas were recorded. He taught himself how to play guitar and made his first record at the age of 16. In the early '60s, he accepted an invitation to play from Grand Kalle Kabasele to join his Orchestra African Jazz replacing Dr. Nico, one of the greatest Congolese guitarists of all time. In the late '70s, Franco asked him to join his Tout Puissant O.K. Jazz. He complemented Franco's more aggressive attack with a lighter, fleeter touch. While with this band, he left in 1984 and assembled a group of musicians, two of whom were from T.P.O.K. Jazz and a horn section from the Congolese army. The result ...
| | Louis Jordan Man Alive It's The Jumping Jive CD (1999)
El Maestro CD music
$12.09 For the most part, this double-disc compilation of tracks by Louis Jordan & His Tympany 5 along with other groups features re-recordings of the classic material he cut for Decca. It's immediately apparent in the sound of these sides. That said, it is Jordan, and it can be honestly said that the man never issued a bad recording. If the original sides are not important to you, or if you are a collector of the brilliant one's sides, this might be a fine way to compare and contrast. If you are looking into Jordan for the first time, it might be best to check out the originals, but you still can't go wrong with this one. ~ Thom Jurek
this 2-CD set contains 51 carefully & tastefully remastered tracks from Jordan's 1940s heyday, inc. the songs "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying", "Ain't That Just Like A Woman" & "Five Guys Named ...
| | Collage Basnie CD (1990) (Import) Reissue; Remastered; Enhanced CD
El Maestro music CDs
$15.75 After releasing a demo tape and after the great exposure of the track "Ja y Ti" on the Polish charts, Collage recorded their first work. Surprising everybody, the band was well received in Europe and afterwards an Italian release was also printed, reinforcing the band's reputation even more. Mainly featuring small and powerful tracks, whose main characteristic is the constant duel of electric guitar and keyboards, this CD is a good start for a new listener of the band. The Polish lyrics are not a hindrance for non-Polish audiences, as the music always flows melodically and the titles, written in English, give an idea of what the lyrics are saying. The title track is reminiscent of early Marillion work, with a neo-progressive drum attack mixed with well-chosen ...
