Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. Rhino's superlative Elmore James retrospective is essential, not only because it brings together 21 of the artist's finest sides, but because it collects those tracks from various periods (1951-1969) and labels (Trumpet, Chess, Flair, Fire, Chief, and Flashback).
