Personnel: Pee Wee Russell (clarinet), Bud Freeman (tenor saxophone), Ruby Braff (trumpet), Vic Dickenson (trombone), Nat Pierce (piano), Charles Potter (bass), Karl Kiffe (drums). Compilation producer: Steve Hoffman. Recorded at Beltone Recording Studios, New York on February 18-19, 1958. Originally released on Counterpoint (CPST-562). Includes liner notes by Charles Edward Smith. Personnel: Pee Wee Russell (clarinet); Bud Freeman (saxophone); Ruby Braff (trumpet); Nat Pierce (piano). Issued originally on Counterpoint and reissued many times since by budget labels like Everest, this CD version has superior sound. From 1958, this set matches the great clarinetist Pee Wee Pussell with an all-star horn section (trumpeter Ruby Braff, trombonist Vic Dickenson and tenor-saxophonist Bud Freeman) on a program of swing standards along with "Pee Wee Blues." Russell, a bit weary of playing Dixieland by this time, was starting to look toward more modern eras of music, although in reality his own playing was always beyond categorization. ~ Scott YanowDown Beat (p.61) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "The almost ethereal sound of his clarinet -- woody, tart and lyrical -- is a revelation." Gil Evans released two records on World Pacific in 1958 and 1959. They were among his earliest dates as a leader. Gil Evans & Ten was issued by Prestige in 1957, but these dates stand out more. | | Stray Cats Gonna Ball CD (2001) (Import) Limited Edition; Remastered; Japan
Portrait Of Pee Wee
$33.99 GONNA BALL is a digtially remastered 12-track release by '80s American rockabilly band The Stray Cats and includes "Baby Blue Eyes" and "Rev It Up And Go." Japanese release. CD comes in Jpn LP Sleeve. The Stray Cats' second album, Gonna Ball, was considered something of a disappointment when it was released in 1981; back then, it had the disadvantage of competing with the expectations raised by its immediate predecessor, a miraculous debut produced under the guidance of Dave Edmunds. When they pulled up stakes in England and returned to the U.S.A., they signed with EMI-America (now BMG) and built their American debut around what the band considered the best songs off of their first two records -- as a result, neither U.K. album was widely heard intact on American shores. Heard on its own terms 23 years later, Gonna Ball seems like a minor masterpiece, capturing the group going deep into early rock & roll ...
