This is a fine album that paradoxically owes much of its originality to its up-front eclecticism. Karl Wallinger's undoubted talent and experience (musical director of The Rocky Horror Show, ex-Waterboys) are applied to create a powerful tribute to his '60s influences. The opening "Is It Too Late" is reminiscent of Them's "Baby Please Don't Go," and is followed by "Way Down Now," complete with "Sympathy For The Devil"-style "woo-woos." It is difficult to keep track of all the styles cleverly woven into the fabric, but the Beatles abound--Wallinger even had his studio built to reproduce the Abbey Road sound for the equally strong follow-up, BANG!
World Party: Karl Wallinger (vocals, guitar); Steve Wickham (violin); Chris Whitten (drums); Guy Chambers (sampler).
Additional personnel: Sinéad O'Connor, Sophia Ramos (vocals).
Rolling Stone (5/31/90) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...displays an ambition as broad as the emotional range of its music...attempts to reclaim the glories to which rock once aspired, while avoiding mere imitation..." Spin (7/90) - "...a winning opus..." Entertainment Weekly - "...airy and delightful..." - Rating B+ Q (12/99, p.68) - Included in Q Magazine's "90 Best Albums Of The 1990s." Q - 4 Stars - Excellent - Ranked by Q as the #1 Album of 1990. Q (6/00, p.60) - Ranked #94 in Q's "100 Greatest British Albums" - "The magpie genius of Karl Wallinger peaked with this merging of seemingly tangential streams of pop, rock, soul, dance and folk....this entire album captivates throughout." Stereo Review (9/90) - Best Recording of the Month - "...a warmhearted, sonically gorgeous collection of lovably eccentric pop songs from a guy who'd be an obvious talent in any era..." Classic When first released in 1990, World Party's second album sounded like an instant classic and years since have proved it to be.
Five years before it Britpop made it fashionable again, Karl Wallinger made an album of beautifully crafted songs that lovingly quote his 60s influences but never descend into pastiche. Using the recording studio as his main instrument, he seemlessly arranges sounds that recall the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Prince but without ever trying to call attention to that fact. Instead, the music is instantly familiar and brand new at the same time.
Goodbye Jumbo, and its follow-up Bang! should have made World Party as big as Oasis. But since Karl was always more interested in crafting the next record than punching photographers outside the Met Bar, it never quite happened that way.
But now that their back-catalogue is being reissued and the new album Dumbing Up is out this week, we have a chance to rectify that injustice. Submitted by Bill (Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Funk Soul Brothers CD (2000)
Goodbye Jumbo CD music
$9.35 As whistle-stop tours of funk go, this is pretty interesting, consisting of 16 cuts mostly drawn from early 1970s records, though a few rather ill-fitting efforts from the early 1980s slip in. Only one of these songs, Curtis Mayfield's "Freddie's Dead," is famous, though other respected gents dot the set, some known more for straight-ahead soul or soul-jazz than for funk: Aaron Neville, Lee Dorsey, Roy Ayers, Jimmy McGriff, the Meters, and Bobby Womack. Filling out the program are names that at this point are mostly known to aficionados, like Ripple, O'Donel Levy, S.O.U.L, and Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul. The lack of big stars or a solid thematic center might put some off, but for funk fans seeking some good off-the-beaten-track sides, this is recommended, both for its quality and eclecticism. It covers credible James Brown knockoffs, like Sir Joe Quarterman & Free Soul's "(I Got) So Much Trouble in My Mind," Moody Scott's "I Don't Dig No Phony Part 2," and Eddie Bo's "If It's Good to You ...
