For his sophomore release Hell Under the Skullbones, intriguing Americana/folk singer/songwriter Graham Lindsey continues much in the same vein as his burnished, poetically charged debut album. But this time the instrumentation and arrangements are more fleshed out, often basking in warmer, fuller colors. The easygoing country-rock groove of the opener "Matchbook Son," recalls the laid-back pulse of the Byrds' Ballad of Easy Rider. "Just Like Dust" and "Deathtrip Blues" have a warped, downtrodden lope that recalls late-'60s Bob Dylan at his most prismatic and off-kilter. By contrast, "Hole in the Ground," when stripped to its core, is essentially a spine-tingling field holler that recalls the pre-bluegrass string bands of Appalachia. He sells all of these guises quite convincingly, and for a relatively young man he possesses one of the most feral and convincing howls among the Americana set. Lindsey, ever the malcontent and wanderer (having found previous artistic refuge in locales as diverse as Wisconsin and Brooklyn), ended up woodshedding these tunes in his adopted Bozeman, MT. As always, though, and regardless of geography, it's his striking poeticism and open-air darkness lashed by slight hints of redemption that make him stand out. This follow-up is as every bit stirring (in both similar and dissimilar ways) as its predecessor, Famous Anonymous Wilderness. Van Dyke Parks and pedal steel great Greg Leisz are among the notable guests pitching in on this album. ~ Erik Hage
This is the 2nd album of punk-influenced folk songs from this 27 year old, this time with guest appearances by Van Dyke Parks, Greg Leisz, Larry Taylor (Tom Waits), Moris Tepper (Captain Beefheart), and Nick Vincent (Frank Black & The Catholics). | | Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Speed Of Life CD (2009)
Hell Under The Skullbones CD music
$15.05 Speed of Life is the first studio album by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in five years and celebrates the group's 43rd anniversary with three of its original members still intact (and no, the number 43 was not a typo). It also finds them reduced once more to a quartet with the departure of multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Ibbotson. That said, the band has lost none of its immediacy, power, or expert presentation of both original material and songs from some of Nashville's finest. Released by Sugar Hill Records (who distributes their NGDB Records imprint), the group recorded the set live in the studio. Produced by veterans George Massenburg and Jon Randall Stewart, this set sounds inspired, fresh, and like the NGDB has been utterly rejuvenated. It combines the old-/good-timey feel of their concert performances -- without adding American folk or country standards -- and the poignancy of their best studio recordings. Jeff Hanna, Jimmie Fadden, Bob Carpenter, and John McEuen were aided on this set by bassist Glenn Worf, guitarist Richard Bennett, and drummer Vince Santoro, as well as backing vocalists such as Matraca Berg (who also contributed a pair of songs to the album), Jessi Alexander, and Jaime Hanna.

$6.25 This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only in Super Audio CD players.
Recorded live at Folsom Prison, Folsom, California on January 13, 1968. Includes liner notes by Johnny Cash and Steve Earle.
Want to hear part of the reason why Johnny Cash is an icon, a singer respected and influential in country, folk, and rock & roll? THIS is it! In 1968--one of the most tumultuous years in American history since the Depression years--Cash recorded an album live in front of a (literally) captive (but wildly appreciative) audience, in Folsom Prison. With two guitars, bass, drums, and a small ...

| | Dierks Bentley Feel That Fire CD (2009)
Hell Under The Skullbones album
$15.65 Five studio albums into his career, Dierks Bentley has carved a successful niche for himself on the Nashville scene, and FEEL THAT FIRE continues to exploit his strengths. Soulful and real enough to stand out from the cookie-cutter Nashville hordes, Bentley takes cues from the outlaw country generation of Waylon Jennings and Wilie Nelson while remaining catchy and commercial enough to be a regular feature on contemporary country radio. The title track and first single is a particular standout, as is the sultry "I Wanna Make You Close Your Eyes" ...
| | Band Of Heathens One Foot In The Ether CD (2009) Digipak
Hell Under The Skullbones CD music
$12.95 As you might expect from a group fronted by three singer/songwriters, the material on One Foot in the Ether is uniformly strong. The band's principals -- Colin Brooks, Gordy Quist, and Ed Jurdi -- all share writing and publishing credits, and since all three play several instruments, the album boasts a diversity of sounds and styles. The first thing that strikes you is how many of these tunes sound like gospel music. Given the name of the band, it's a real surprise. "Shine a Light" is a mellow, call-and-response number with churchy organ, stinging slide guitar, and an uplifting lyric. "You're Gonna Miss Me" is a blues with a gospel tinge, although the lyric is strictly secular. An odd, stuttering, New Orleans backbeat supplied by drummer John Chipman and rousing group vocals make the track take fire. "Let Your Heart Not Be Troubled" is a love song with a strong hint of gospel and a deep spiritual feeling, a heartfelt expression of sympathy to a friend in need of a helping hand. "Talking Out Loud" is another secular spiritual and sounds like something the Band might have recorded with a vocal that suggests the style of Levon Helm. "Golden Calf" is a swampy field holler that references a famous Old Testament image; the music is dark, bluesy and funereal, a blend of Howlin' Wolf and the Staple Singers. There's also the ...

| | Flying Burrito Brothers Gilded Palace Of Sin CD (1969)
Hell Under The Skullbones songs
$16.19 THE GILDED PALACE OF SIN is also available domestically on HOT BURRITOS!: THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS ANTHOLOGY 1969-1972.
The Gilded Palace Of Sin allowed two former Byrds, Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman, to fully explore country music. Several selections, notably "Christine's Tune" and "Wheels," succeeded in capturing the joys of Nashville-inspired rock, but the group proved equally adept at interpreting southern soul standards. Parsons' aching vocal on Dan Penn's "Dark End Of The Street" articulated the dilemmas of infidelity, while on his own composition, "Hot Burrito No. 1," he revealed a vulnerability ...
