| | The Ultimate Bee Gees CDs (2009)
Gold CD music
$15.24 Functioning as something of a replacement for the 2001 collection Their Greatest Hits: The Record, The Ultimate Bee Gees covers much of the same ground as that double-disc set, albeit in not quite so linear a fashion. The Record marched through its 40 tracks chronologically, opening with the stately baroque ...
| | Isaac Hayes Shaft (Deluxe Edition) CD (1971) Bonus Track; Remastered; Deluxe Edition
Gold music CDs
$9.58 Despite its codification into our collective pop culture consciousness, Isaac Hayes' "Theme From Shaft" is a highly original composition. It's been remade by Hayes himself for the remade Shaft film, and appropriately kicks off this collection of tunes from the movie by some of R&B's New Jacks.
A diverse selection of artists encompass the collection, from lascivious soul stirrer R. Kelly to the rugged Latin hip-hop of Fulanito, along with many other noteworthy diversions that represent the many flavors of contemporary urban soul. Most of the material focuses on John Shaft's street smarts and bravado, or the film's pimps, hoes, and gangsta imagery. As expected, Southern hip-hop is well represented, with Outkast, Mystikal, and Big Gipp from Goodie Mob contributing. The tracks offer typically ...

| | Maxwell Now CD (2001)
Gold CD music
$8.89 "Lifetime" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.
Rebounding from the slight sophomore lag generated by 1998's EMBRYA, Maxwell's follow-up NOW abandons the neo-soul man's usual M.O. of using a conceptual arc of songs, and instead focuses on individual cuts. Romance remains the main ingredient found in this Brooklyn native's banquet of song, and although he stands firmly in the neo-soul camp of D'Angelo and Erykah, his use of various stylistic nuances once again stamps him as an original item. Twangy country-flavored licks and subtle DJ scratches pop up throughout the lament "Was My Girl," and scratchy rock guitar riffs are sparingly used over the heavy groove of "Temporary ...
| | Aluminum Group Plano CD (1998)
Gold music CDs
$12.49 Aluminum Group's second album betrays an obvious Magnetic Fields influence. One of the two singing Navin brothers even sounds uncannily like the Fields' Stephin Merritt, particularly on the gently percolating "Steam." The Chicago band's other main influence appears to be '70s soft-rock. "Nine Months Later" even quotes Cher's "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves," and "Angel On A Trampoline" wouldn't sound a bit out of place on any soft-favorites radio station.
All of Frank and John Navin's songs are absolutely lovely. Their arrangements are tasteful-a dot of horns here, a dash of analog synthesizer there, lush strings and acoustic guitars everywhere. The characteristically pristine production of David Trumfio (Pulsars) ...
| | Anthony Pappa Global Underground: Nubreed CDs (2000)
Gold songs
$21.05 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Anthony Pappa.
While the concepts underlying the inaugural release of Global Underground's NuBreed series are both intriguing and refreshing, Anthony Pappa's mix unfortunately doesn't quite reach the preconceived expectations most loyal Global Underground listeners will have. A few songs into the first set, these exceptions seem to be fulfilled as the Melbourne DJ drops some driving, straight-ahead progressive house tracks that forcefully move the momentum forward and start the first set off on a high note. Unfortunately, ...
