Nigh-on three years after 'folly' and at least 18 moons since the john peel session where the ideas were first aired, Darren Durham returns under the fortdax moniker with his somewhat-overdue new album. No, he's not entirely sure where the time went either.what can be said for certain though is that 'divers' is noticeably different in to & hue to its predecessor and assuredly darker, although its core, as with previous fortdax releases, remains firmly rooted in melody. Folly' went on to be regarded as an 'ambient' work in certain quarter, but Darren swears that this was largely due to the low-volume mastering. Suffice it to say that 'divers' contains less of 'those Vangelis synthesizers' and a sleeve instruction to play much louder'. This time around, there may also be other musicians involved, an amount of real (read 'physical') instrumentation, and at least one field recording from the Bronte country valley where he lives & works. As per 'folly', the album is dedicated to his dog 'meg' although as with his geographical placement, that's not necessarlly significant. Very Frien. 2006

It's a commonly held opinion among fans and band alike that Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers' lone live album, 1986's Pack Up the Plantation, didn't quite capture the group at its peak, so there has been a long-standing need for another live set, which 2009's Live Anthology finally provides. Like its closest cousin, Bruce Springsteen's Live 1975-1985, Live Anthology almost overcompensates for the long wait by offering almost too much music, cherrypicking highlights from 1978 to 2007. In its simplest incarnation, Live Anthology is a super-affordable, four-disc box set running 48 tracks, which is eight cuts longer than Springsteen's box, plenty long enough for most fans, but in its deluxe version, available only through Best Buy, there's an additional CD, plus two previously unreleased DVDs -- a 1978 New Years Eve concert from Santa Monica, a documentary called 400 ...

It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." He burst onto the scene a couple of years later than Elvis Costello and Graham Parker, but Joe Jackson completed British rock's Angry Young Man trinity. As evidenced by his '79 debut, Jackson was a bit more eclectic than Parker or (early) Costello, and a touch ahead of both in terms of harmonic sophistication (though he downplayed his compositional chops at the beginning). Jonny Hirsch has established himself as one of New York City's most exciting solo artists. While other singers and saxophone players lead their bands exclusively on vocals or saxophone, Jonny is a multi-dimensional frontman - he leads the show with both his voice and saxophone. The 28 year old singer/saxophone player is often compared to the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Karl Denson, and Steely Dan. While fusing together elements of rock, funk, jazz, and skat singing with a powerful voice and a dynamic saxophone, Jonny’s music has taken on a genre all of its own. His unique style attracts a variety of New York City concertgoers and musicians. Over the past few years, some of New York City’s best studio and touring musicians (including Oz Noy, Andy Galore, and Ruben Rodriguez) have been part of Jonny’s band. “It’s an all-star band with Jonny leading the charge,” says lead guitar player Rich Simpson. “The songwriting is catchy and fun, but it also allows for a lot of interpretation and improvisation.
