Beaubourg album
$9.95 Greek composer/keyboardist Vangelis has been through so many stylistic mutations over the years that it's hard to pin down his musical center. From the progressive rock of his band Aphrodite's Child to his art pop collaborations with Yes vocalist Jon Anderson and his romantic film score work, he's shown many sides of a complex artistic persona. EL GRECO extends his vision one step further. Inspired by and dedicated to legendary 16th century Greek painter El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos), this is an impressionistic ...

Beaubourg music CDs
$39.85 When EMI signed the teenage prodigy Kate Bush, the label claimed that in order to nurture her talent, it wouldn't release her first album until she had a few years to grow up. As a result, her debut, THE KICK INSIDE, didn't see daylight for three years. On the other hand, her second album, LIONHEART, was rush-released only nine months after the success of its predecessor. Fortunately, Kate still had some leftover songs from the debut session, helping make her sophomore effort an equally strong offering.
With the wisdom of someone much older, Kate looks at sex, spirituality, and death in "Symphony in Blue"; at childhood in "Peter Pan"; and the trauma of relationships in "Fullhouse" and "Don't Push Your Foot on the Heartbreak." Her handwritten lyrics for the beautiful "Oh England My Lionheart" give her away--the handwriting is that of the 16-year-old she was at the time. As Kate often said in those days, "wow."

| | Kate Bush Never For Ever (Japan LP Sleeve) CD (1980) (Import) Japan; Mini LP Sleeve
Beaubourg songs
$40.45 Two years after her first two releases, Kate Bush took her career into her own hands and produced NEVER FOR EVER. Though at the time she was younger than 21, Bush confidently became the careful, experimental studio-only artist she remained for the remainder of her career. Bush created a marriage of groundbreaking, up-to-the-minute technology with little-used acoustic instruments. She also tempered the little girl voice that was her trademark to produce a work of near brilliance.
NEVER FOR EVER opens with "Babooshka," a song that sets an auspicious stage for what follows. Her spiritual fascination continues with "Blow Away" and "All We Ever Look For." The theme of incest first hinted at on THE KICK INSIDE continues on "Infant Kiss." But the true highlights of this album are the lilting waltz of "Army Dreamers," as well as "Breathing," a song about an unborn baby ...
| | Kate Bush Red Shoes (Japan LP Sleeve) CD (1993) (Import) Japan; Mini LP Sleeve
Beaubourg album
$40.45 Kate Bush was never the most prolific of artists; this 1993 album and its attendant singles formed her complete '90s output. Her recordings are carefully conceived, densely orchestrated, and finely tuned, and THE RED SHOES is no exception. Though spontaneity may not be her strong suit, her records are never dull or self-indulgent.
Among Kate Bush's most relaxed recordings, THE RED SHOES features a number of guest appearances, notably Eric Clapton, Nigel Kennedy, and Jeff Beck. Highlights include the appropriately bouncy "Rubberband Girl," the double entendre-laden "Eat the Music," complete with a great horn section, and "Big Stripey Lie," an angry track shot through with distortion and some of Bush's most agonized vocals since her 1980 album NEVER FOR EVER. Also noteworthy is "Why Should I Love You?" an interesting collusion between Bush's introspective style and loose funk lite, courtesy of The Artist Hereafter Known As Prince Rodgers Nelson.

| | Conrad Praetzel Myths & Memories CD (1993)
Beaubourg music CDs
$14.79 MYTHS AND MEMORIES is a kind of crucible wherein the music of the world is mixed by the hands of a sorcerer. That sorcerer is Conrad Praetzel, a multi-instrumentalist who uses guitars, keyboards, and percussion to sculpt a densely textured sonic world that gestures toward Africa, Asia, and South America all at once, while maintaining a firmly contemporary Western sensibility.
Praetzel's compositions pulse and shimmer, building and changing over layers of percussion in ways that engage the mind, yet stay rooted in a visceral groove. While Praetzel may give overt nods to India here ("The Awakening") or Australia there ("Message from the Outback"), he is also clearly influenced by Western minimalist composers like Steve Reich (some of the pieces have fugue-like, repetitious structures) and down-tempo and ambient electronica. Ultimately, though, Praetzel is a citizen of the world, synthesizing the cultures ...

| | Scratching Post This Time It's Personal CD (2000)
Beaubourg album
$18.59 Scratching Post took a bit of a chance with this late-2000 release. In an attempt at musical expansion, the metallic-edged Ontario quartet worked with Ann Arbor, MI, producers Chris and Drew Peters. Incendiary alt-rock and hints of electronica were brought in to complement the band's scathing pop-punk stylings. The resulting This Time It's Personal is smoldering, dark, and has a center that is like the heart of a volcano. The middle point of the recording is where Scratching Post lays down their thickest and hottest hooks, propelled by sassy punk chords and assertive vocals. "Pants Down" is lively and sexy, "Keep Looking My Way" and "Dragonfire" are sensual and self-aware, while "Make It Easy" is melodically playful and danceable. Lead singer Nicole Hughes boldly embraces her self-actualizing/in-your-face posture as the modern-day femme ...

| | Erik Wollo Red Sky, Blue Guitars CD (2004)
Beaubourg album
$12.85 Tracks like "Blue Sky" and "Sedona" are steeped in the vastness of the American Southwest, with gently echoing solos summoning the spirit of Native American flutes. A highlight is "Red Guitars," which creates an aural river of cascading acoustic energy. There's an Asian twist to the Flamenco-style guitar on "Destiny," while Wollo's Norwegian sense of irony comes to the fore in all-acoustic covers of Kraftwerk's "Computer Love" and "In the Hall of Mirrors." Other nice touches include the bouncing percussion of "Moving" and "Rain Tree"'s ominous clouds of swirling guitar arpeggios. Whether for meditation, massage, or deep headphone voyaging, this is an album that gently parts the mist of time to reveal the lovely, endless vistas within.
