This two-fer CD brings together a pair of Nancy Wilson's mid-'60s dates for Capitol. Wilson's nuanced vocals might seem an awkward match with the over the top theatrics of the Great White Way, but From Broadway with Love bends the material to the singer's strengths, eschewing show tune dramatics in favor of subtle, atmospheric arrangements courtesy of Sid Feller. Wilson and Feller both approach the songs from a perspective rooted in traditional jazz and pop, gravitating to material that draws on the same inspirations -- moreover, selections like "He Loves Me" and "Here's That Rainy Day" play perfectly to the singer's remarkable capacity to articulate the exhilaration and heartache of romance. Modern mathematics isn't quite capable of counting how many R&B bands existed in Great Britain during the 1960s, but like a significant number of them, the V.I.P.s were destined to win greater recognition after they called it quits than while they were together. The final version of the V.I.P.s evolved into Spooky Tooth, who enjoyed chart success in both Europe and the United States during their late-'60s/early-'70s heyday, while guitarist Luther Grosvenor became a member of Mott the Hoople after changing his name to Ariel Bender (he also received some less than flattering reviews from several young women in the documentary Groupies, but that's another story). Given their résumé and the obscurity of their catalog, one might not expect much from The Complete V.I.P.s, but this double-disc compilation makes it clear this band was better than the average gathering ...

Steered by Randy Diderrich, the Chicago quintet Sundayrunners offer a fantastic song cycle on their eponymous debut. Influences like Radiohead, Doves, and the Pixies are felt in both the upbeat opener, "Elected," and the quirky, experimental pop song "Memories Left at Sea," but if Sundayrunners draw inspiration from said greats, they still boast a uniqueness that keeps them from sounding derivative. As the disc plays out, the material holds up, from the pensive "1993" to the distorted, fractured magic of "Evolver." If the drama that propels "Floor Toms Fall Away" -- which recalls several tracks on David Bowie's classic Hunky Dory -- seems a little overblown at first, it quickly reveals itself to be an ideal forum for keyboardist Aaron Grant to display his talent.
