Recorded at the venerable New York City venue in the spring following the 9/11attacks, this live set by renegade folkie Ani DiFranco is palpably informed by those tragic events, as the singer/songwriter plainly indicates in the album's liner notes. With only her plaintive voice and acoustic guitar, DiFranco mesmerizes the audience with highly emotional songs, most notably an early version of the extended piece "Serpentine" and the poem "Self Evident," which explicitly, and unflinchingly, addresses the aforementioned day in 2001. Ideal for DiFranco diehards, the release also offers up a sterling example of her spare, percussive aesthetic for newcomers to her impressive catalogue.
Personnel: Ani DiFranco (vocals, guitar).
Dirty Linen (p.55) - "DiFranco has a way of delivering words that is visceral. The politically charged poem 'Self Evident' is both wrenching and exhilarating."
