U.S. Bombs: Duane Peters (vocals); Kerry Martinez (guitar, harmonica, piano, bajon, bass guitar); Curl Stitch (guitar); Jamie Reidling (drums). Additional personnel: Doug Summers (piano); Andy Dahill, Zander Schloss (bass guitar). Fronted by skateboarding star Duane Peters, the U.S. Bombs have been keeping the punk spirit of 1977 alive since the early 1990s. This 2006 release finds them sticking close to their roots in a lively set of anthemic punk rock that recalls the glory days of the Clash on "Guns of the West" and "Heartbreak Motel," early-'80s rabble-rousing Sham 69 on "Last Dischord," and the boozy camaraderie of the Pogues on "Tonight." | | U S Bombs Back At The Laundromat CD (2001)
We Are The Problem
$9.89 U.S. Bombs: Duane Peters (vocals); Kerry Martinez (guitar, background vocals); Wade Walston (bass, background vocals); Chip Hanna (drums, background vocals). Principally recorded at Hard Tracks Studios, Silverado, California. Never was there a truer cliché than the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, something the U.S. Bombs have been confirming since the release of their debut single, "Scouts of America," back in 1995. Reduce the band's sound to its constituent pieces, and you're left with heaps of rifled old-school punk riffs, guitar leads, and rhythms littered across the floor. Glue them back together, and you'd have one killer British ...

| | Bouncing Souls Gold Record CD (2006)
We Are The Problem
$11.39 New Jersey's Bouncing Souls have been plying their brand of energetic, carefree hardcore since the late 1980s, and THE GOLD RECORD, released on Epitaph in 2006, is a testament to their longevity. The Bouncing Souls have a generous head start on the legions of punk-pop bands of the mid-2000s, and their amped-up, anthemic songs prove it. While the tunes on THE GOLD RECORD don't shy away from memorable melodies, there is a sense of muscle and purpose here that's lacking in many contemporary punk bands. From "The Gold Song" to "For All the Unheard," this collection shows a band that's earned its stripes and wears them proudly. There's something to be said for a band that can be in the game for nearly two decades and not only remain relevant, but still retain the spirit and exuberance of a band just starting out. Not only do the Bouncing Souls consistently do just this on each album, but their songs -- at heart just basically melodic pop-punk ...

These days, dubwise takes a back seat to dancehall in the reggae market. Go to a CD store that sells a lot of reggae -- perhaps in Kingston, Jamaica, perhaps in the Brixton section of London -- and you'll find a lot more new dancehall recordings than new dub recordings. Nonetheless, dub still has an audience, and not everyone who is recording dub in the 21st century favors a ...

| | Delta Spirit Ode To Sunshine CD (2007)
We Are The Problem
$11.89 The Delta Spirit's 2008 debut album, ODE TO SUNSHINE, was released on esteemed roots label Rounder Records. And while the band doesn't exactly evoke the traditional Americana threads on which Rounder built its reputation, there is something decidedly honest and soulful about Delta Spirit's music. Piano-driven tunes such as "Trashcan" and "Strange Vine" evoke a slightly rawer My Morning Jacket or a dustier Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, while "Bleeding Bells" and "People, Turn Around" have a bittersweet ache that recalls Jeff Tweedy at his most desperate-sounding. It's contemporary references like these that ultimately make Delta Spirit intriguing, for though the inspirations that the band's name evoke are powerful, they are far from the only ones that have played a part in their sound. You can take the boy out of the emo but you can't take the emo out of the boy as Delta Spirit shows on its debut for the Americana oriented Rounder label. The ex-Noise Ratchet founders shift to more rootsy territory with their new band, yielding impressive results. Call it indie folk or anti-folk, there is no doubt about similarities to the Violent Femmes and especially the Waterboys, both in the predominantly acoustic ...
