| | As Hope Dies Birthplace And Burial Site CD (2002)
Sophie Zelmani music CDs
$10.45 Birth Place and Burial Site" is a more focused and mature release than any previous As Hope Dies releases; a sincere outpouring of total emotion.
Birth Place and Burial Site, the six-song EP from As Hope Dies, is an energetic and strangely melodic aural assault. Where many of their contemporaries in the black metal world tend to mix their melodic passages with blinding thrash riffs, As Hope Dies approaches things with a twin-guitar assault reminiscent of vintage Iron Maiden. This use of power metal riffing helps the material greatly, as the barking-dog vocals have a memorable wall ...

| | Glee Cast Glee: The Music, Vol. 2 CD (2009) (Import) Original Soundtrack; United Kingdom
Sophie Zelmani CD music
$9.58 The second Glee soundtrack throws a bone to the show's supporting characters, with Jenna Ushkowitz (the faux-stuttering Tina) singing her first solo and Amber Riley (Mercedes) receiving a larger chunk of airtime. Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison continue to steal the show, though; Morrison delivers one of the album's most inventive songs with a mash-up of "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Young Girl," while Michele sings the absolute pants off of everything the producers give her. The album sometimes strays away from choral arrangements and focuses on individual actors, but it's hard not to sing along with a song like "Jump," where the cast replaces Eddie Van Halen's keyboard riff with bright choral harmonies. ~ Andrew Leahey
The second Glee soundtrack feels a bit rushed, arriving no less than four weeks after Vol. 1's release and featuring songs from half as many episodes. Returning fans will still find a lot to enjoy here, though, as Jenna Ushkowitz (the faux-stuttering Tina) gets her first solo and supporting characters Amber Riley (Mercedes) and Kevin McHale (Artie) enjoy a healthier chunk of airtime. Nevertheless, Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison continue to steal the show, with Morrison delivering one of the album's most inventive songs -- a mash-up of "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Young Girl" -- and Michele singing the absolute pants off of "My Life Would Suck Without You." As before, this album sometimes strays away from choral arrangements and sounds more like a collection of karaoke recordings, and the use of Auto-Tune (most noticeably during Lily Allen's "Smile," where Cory ...
| | Renaissance Tales Of 1001 Nights, Vol. 1 CD (1990)
Sophie Zelmani music CDs
$9.39 Part of Sire's "Plundering The Vaults" series. Compilation of early Sire material by the group. Original founding members Keith Relf and Jim McCarty (of The Yardbirds) left Renaissance before these volumes were recorded.
This 75-minute compilation and its companion volume are just about the only acknowledgments on the part of Sire Records that it ever had a progressive rock catalog, somewhere in between signing the Ramones and Madonna. The song lineup on this first volume heavily favors the group's early repertory, including songs originally done for the Sovereign label, represented here in concert recordings from Renaissance Live at Carnegie Hall. How attractive that is depends upon how one feels about those performances, versus the original studio renditions (available from One Way Records domestically and, in superior versions, from HTD Records in England). They were never too impressive on vinyl, although the digital remastering and re-equalization of the material seems to have solved much of that problem. The original Sire studio material, including "Running Hard" and "Black Flame," sound better here than they did on their original vinyl releases, which had fairly noisy pressings and were somewhat top-heavy on the bass. The accompaniments all sound crisper on the CD, the nuances and fine balances between the band and the orchestra much easier to appreciate, and the only major flaw -- and it is a big one -- is the absence of "Song of Scheherazade," ...
| | Chemical Brothers Singles '93-'03 CDs (2003) Bonus CD; Limited Edition
Sophie Zelmani songs
$13.09 Celebrating 10 years of innovative electronica and party-starting dance grooves, this 13-track Chemical Brothers collection moves chronologically through the numerous highlights of the duo's recording career. Groundbreaking early singles "Song to the Siren" and "Chemical Beats" offer the first examples of their unique combination of hip-hop beats and electro-distortion hooks, before "Leave Home" ushers in the arrival of the landmark EXIT PLANET DUST album. Although SINGLES surprisingly omits "Life Is Sweet (with Tim Burgess of the Charlatans UK) and "Alive Alone" (featuring a then-unknown Beth Orton), it does includes other excellent tracks such as "Setting Sun" (one of two Noel Gallagher collaborations), "Block Rockin' Beats," "The Private Psychedelic Reel" (with Jonathan Donahue of Mercury Rev), and "The Test" (featuring Richard Ashcroft). And as outstanding icing on their birthday cake, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons present two previously unreleased tracks, the funky "Get Yourself High," and the mystic, majestic chime of "The Golden Path" (featuring the Flaming Lips).
Ed and Tom's ten-year anniversary was an excellent time ...
