Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) 5 stars

5 stars Kill Your Own = Another hit of perfection!
Hundred Reasons have done it again - we have waited patiently for the new album, especially after the tussle with Sony [blergh] records...but it's finally here. So, did it live up to expectation? Oh yes...damn right it did. "Broken Hands" spends a little time winding up, when you KNOW it arrives when the time comes. It's a blistering rock song that definatly sets the pace for the album to come. "Kill Your Own" is another fantastic song, that will have your socks rocking. "Destroy" changes the sound of the album slightly, but this is definatly not a bad thing. It's a typical "Falter" type song. "The Chance" keeps with the above style slightly, turning a slow tune into a melodic heaven when the chorus slams in. "The Perfect Gift", one of my favourite tracks off the album, still keeping with the slower pace, this song is by no means "soft!". "Live Fast, Die Ugly" is a very fast paced song. One of HR's typical "Screamy" songs that they have a few of. It's OK, but not one of the albums best moments. But then we get to hear "Feed The Fire", which is my favourite HR song of all time. It just has one of the best melodies ever, with a great guitar sound to back it up with. And who can't resist the old woodblock sound? "This Mess" is another slow song, again remanisant of a "Falter" style song, the chorus of which is sung by the second guitarist. Another one of my least favourite songs on the album, but not a bad song in any way. "A Better Way?" is another song similar to Live Fast, Die Ugly, but with a bit more substance as a song. "No Pretending" is amazing - again, more full blown riffs with some fantastic vocals. One of the albums best moments. "Breathe Again" is a great finisher, but is definatly not how HR albums are normally finished [acoustic song to end]. This song drags a bit at the end, but prior to that is very good. All in all, it's still VERY hard for me to pick a second favourite HR album - Ideas Above will always be top, but Shatterproof and this album have a LOT to offer and will constantly fight for second place in my mind.

Rush is no stranger to best-of compilation albums, they've released a slew of them. They are also no stranger to DVDs. To mark their 35th anniversary, they've released Working Men, which is both; it marks their first best-of live compilation exclusively from the DVD sets Rush in Rio (2003), R30 (2005), and Snakes & Arrows Live (2008). There is also an unreleased cut from R30 -- a killer version of One Little Victory. While fans may simply regard this as a record company cash grab, hardcore fans know how closely Rush monitors each release and controls all aspects of their career. On hearing these tracks without benefit of the visuals, it becomes lucidly clear that in the 21st century, Rush plays more like a hungry act looking to prove themselves rather than as seasoned veterans jaded by the entire business. The instrumental interaction between Neal Peart, Alex Lifeson, and Geddy ...

Extravaganza
Stackridge Extravaganza CD  (1974) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom

Kill Your Own
CD $16.19
After the lavishly produced The Man in the Bowler Hat, it seemed that Stackridge might have blown their best chance of a commercial breakthrough. Just to make sure they did so good and proper, however, they promptly embarked upon the first of a series of bitter internal disputes that meant any fans turning up to a gig did so wondering who'd be playing and who'd be sat at home nursing a grudge. Whichever way you look at it, though, Extravaganza was a pretty odd follow-up, and one that must have left their new label -- Elton John's Rocket Records -- seething with frustration. By now it must have been clear that expecting Stackridge to focus their energies on a single musical direction was an exercise in futility, and in any case totally contrary to the spirit of the band. But with Andy Davis now calling most of the shots, he and new members Rod Bowkett, Paul Karas, and Keith Gemmell (who replaced Mutter Slater, James Warren, and Mike Evans) set about cultivating a Zappa-ish tendency that, though it had been there from the very beginning, had never before dominated proceedings as it did here. Extravaganza contained no fewer than three (admittedly delightful) intricate ...

Procol Harum Home CD  (1970) Bonus Tracks; Remastered

Kill Your Own
CD $11.65  Top 500 Audio Samples
The fourth album by Procol Harum was released as the band was in the midst of a significant shift. With the departure of organist Matthew Fisher, guitarist Robin Trower stepped more to the fore. The two-keyboard approach was still being utilized, with singer Gary Brooker's piano being joined on some selections by the organ playing of multi-instrumentalist Chris Copping. However, the stately grandeur that had been previously applied with grace and subtlety gave way to a band that rocked much harder. HOME is the work of a changed but still very compelling Procol Harum. Just compare this album's opening track, "Whiskey Train," to title-track opener on the band's previous album, A SALTY DOG. Orchestral epics largely give way to bluesy riffing, but as the album rolls along the familiar characteristic strains, both sonic and lyrical, offer a full dose of Procol Harum's dark and symphonic sensibilities. The group's hardest-rocking classic album is, beyond some superb vocalizing by Gary Brooker, principally a showcase for Robin Trower's high-powered guitar and a rock-hard rhythm section, with B.J. Wilson only a little less animated than Ginger Baker on some of the music. Procol Harum had a split personality by this time, the band juxtaposing straight-ahead rock ...
