Where this album's predecessor IN SEARCH OF THE LOST CHORD dipped deeply into Eastern-flavored psychedelia, THRESHOLD is more of a straightforward rock record. Things open up experimentally enough, with a spoken-word vignette over electronic drones, but this leads straight into one of the Moodies' poppiest, most up-tempo songs, "Lovely to see You," which would remain a concert favorite for decades. Even notoriously theatrical flautist/vocalist Ray Thomas keeps his eccentricities in check on his effective ballad "Dear Diary."
Keyboardist Mike Pinder takes a surprisingly lascivious vocal turn on the anomalous, leering rocker "So Deep Within You." Justin Hayward provides the lion's share of ear-tickling moments with pretty folk-rock tunes such as "Never Comes the Day" and "Are you Sitting Comfortably," while the most adventurous piece "Have you Heard/The Voyage" extends over three discrete tracks, featuring complex instrumental passages and lush harmonies. THRESHOLD doesn't come off as an attempt to cater to the mainstream, it's just a more song-based, less exotic recording than its predecessors.
Digitally remastered by Steve Fallone (PolyGram Studios).
Includes liner notes by David Lymonds and Lionel Bart.

Uncut (p.120) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[The album deserves] a prominent place in the pantheon of British prog/pscyh classics." Mojo (Publisher) (9/00, p.121) - "...They Gregorian chanted as well as the Yardbirds, they structured their song cycles wonderfully, they made better use of the Mellotron than anyone, and nobody sang daft lyrics more beautifully..." **Super Audio CD (SACD)** A Super Audio CD player is required to play this CD. This is no a 5.1 is just a 4.0, This is the record with the less bass I heard in my entire life. The music is great but... Submitted by Ricardo M. (Queretaro, Mexico) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Moodies deserve better than this I have loved the music of the Moody Blues since first hearing them back in the '60's. They really took off when their first concept album, "Days of Future Passed", was released. It's my conjecture that their music is a bit more intellectual than most other rock music. Finding out UMG were releasing these SACD's, but only in Europe, got me onto the web to find where I could get 'em. And get 'em I did! OTTOAD is one of my faves, but the sonics on this disc aren't up to the hype given them. I can't deny the music is first rate, but when the sticker on the front of the jacket clearly indicates a 5.1 mix, that's what I expect. Instead, I got the 4.0 quadraphonic mix, which was used on the open-reel and 8-track tapes. So no subwoofer,no center channel. A note in the liner notes indicated
"5.1 surround mix manipulated from the original quadraphonic masters by Paschal Byrne and Mark Powell". Manipulated? I don't think so. What we have here is what's on those quad tapes. Nothing more, nothing less. If the original multitrack master still exists, that is what they should have used. If not, they should have just left well enough alone. Have You Heard??....................... Absolutely a must have for any Moodies fan. From the first track on, the separation and clarity of the instruments blew me away. Each time I listen I hear new things in the mixes. The Mellotron is mixed to the front which in my case is a must. The Mellotron is what attracted me to the Moodies in the first place. The extra tracks give a new insight to how the the tunes were put together; with count ins and fade outs that are not on the originals. You MUST buy these!!! A New Threshold! The Moody Blues have re-released their albums as Remastered and a few in DTS, but finally they are now available in Hybrid SACD. This version is a keeper including some very rare and enormously well mastered and remixed songs.
No previous Moody Blues album has contained such rare BBC sessions, outtakes and alternate mixes. One needs no other recording of this classic album. The box is half plastic and half cardboard which might not last as long as a regular CD package. However, the liner package notes are exhaustive with many new pictures and a complete history.
