| | Once Upon A Time In Mexico CD (2003) Original Soundtrack
Chill In India CD music
$15.05 With a score composed and performed largely by director Robert Rodriguez, the soundtrack to ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO contains, as you'd perhaps expect from a film whose title nods to Sergio Leone, more than its share of Ennio Morricone musical stylings. This is revealed most particularly in the form of tracks such as "Guitar Town," with its echoing, stinging guitar sound that's lifted straight from the Morricone playbook. But there's more to this superlative soundtrack than mere imitation.
Brian Setzer contributes a fine instrumental take on the traditional "Malaguena," while, not to be outdone in the instrumental stakes, guitarist Marcos Loya performs a flamenco-style track on "Yo Te Quiero." Heavy on tension-filled atmospherics (you can almost see the sweaty brows and narrowed eyes), ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO is a worthy Leone/Morricone pastiche and a fitting ...

Chill In India CD music
$13.79 PURE-IMPURE EP, Seefeel's fearless nosedive into the dub currents of the ambient-techno vortex, inspired droves of lemming-like dream-popsters to follow in their footsteps. Seefeel, meanwhile, moved on to the much icier climes of SUCCOUR and [CH-VOX] before splintering into such projects as Scala, Disjecta, Aurobindo, and Sneakster.
QUIQUE submerses Seefeel in the little-fluffy-cloud-reflecting pool shared by such atmospheric architects as The Orb and 20th Century minimalists like Philip Glass and Steve Reich. The album is a Chinese puzzle-box of intertwined repetitions. Clifford's guitar phrases, processed into sighs, smears, and silvery streaks, are looped on an infinite reel. Fletcher and Clifford spin beats into eternal rhythmic spirals. Peacock's seraphic vocal wisps are whipped to soft-peaked froth in the Seefeel centrifuge or tauntingly revealed as loops are peeled away. "Plainsong" floats a solitary thought-fragment ("the one thing") through a mechanical maze of arches and rhythmic clockwork turnings. Seymour's deeply entrancing basslines steer such tracks as "Industrious" and "Filter Dub." Elsewhere, they're entirely absorbed by the ether.
The early days of Seefeel are as bright as they are mysterious. Mark Clifford, Daren Seymour, Justin Fletcher, and Sarah Peacock had unleashed a curious blend of prog rock, ambience, and minimalism -- a sort of electronic hybrid that had listeners simultaneously scratching their heads while hitting the repeat button. The song's structures are based on adding and subtracting layers, keeping chord changes at a minimum. Tracks like "Climactic Phase 3" and "Polyfusion" ride glittering collages of keyboard loops, cyclical guitar feedback, and thunking drum machines, occasionally garnished by Peacock's wordless vocal phrasings. "Industrious" is an open sky of majestic ambience and vocals, with clipped drums anchoring the mix on all sides. It makes for a prog rock reminder of early Aphex Twin (a longtime supporter of Clifford), and the mutual influence shows. "Imperial" overlaps several watery layers of sequencing for another (and especially chromatic) soundscape, inducing a sort of trance that has nothing to do with the dancefloor. "Plainsong" grooves along in an up-tempo stratosphere, the album's most likely candidate for any sort of radio play. Here, Peacock's voice is equally plain in delivery -- certainly unintelligible -- a supporting character that follows the song rather than leads it. "Charlotte's Mouth" is yet another assembly of heavily produced guitar loops, like harmonic droplets of feedback that fall around a dry rhythm track ...
