| | Paul Oakenfold Lively Mind CD Paul Oakenfold Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
A LIVELY MIND sparkles with high-profile guest stars, including actress Brittany Murphy on the thumping opener "Faster Kill Pussycat," Pharrell Williams on the driving disco jam "Sex 'n Money," and hip-hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash on "Set It Off." But it is Oakenfold's reliably pleasurable beats, samples, and top-notch production that distinguish the effort.
Paul Oakenfold has been at the top of the DJ/producing game since the 1980s, and 2006's A LIVELY MIND found him still going strong. The house music icon shows off many of his familiar skills here, which can be both a strength and a liability. But while Oakenfold may not be on the cutting edge of the scene anymore, he still knows how to work an infectious house groove to perfect advantage.
Personnel: Paul Oakenfold (vocals); Grandmaster Flash, Pharrell Williams, Ryan Tedder, Brittany Murphy (vocals); Joseph Saddler (keyboards); Ian Green (programming).

Lively Mind
$14.65 The wide-ranging, freewheeling modes of BUNKKA (the name comes from Peter Gabriel's studio in the UK, where the album was recorded) are comparable with the catchall stylings of Paul Oakenfold's fellow dance enthusiast, Moby. So it should come as little surprise to anyone who followed Oakenfold's career over the pervious decade that he's come up with an album that's at least as eclectic as anything the aforementioned techno elf had produced lately.
Oakenfold is best known as a dance remix artist, whose credits also include producing Happy Mondays' best-selling PILLS 'N' THRILLS & BELLYACHES and remixing tracks for U2. So the inclusion of several guitar-heavy tracks, plus a guest appearance from Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell, should raise few eyebrows, but it's with dance-flavored ...

| | Paul Van Dyk Politics Of Dancing, Vol. 2 CDs (2005)
Lively Mind
$12.55 It differs little from his previous releases, but Paul Van Dyk's The Politics of Dancing, Vol. 2 is a satisfying argument that trance isn't dead and not even on life support. One bit of newness is the speed at which Van Dyk discards tracks on disc one's mix, a 17-song epic journey into uplifting, atmospheric dancefloor dreaminess. Theatrical stops and starts feature into every one of these blissful numbers, but Van Dyk keeps things moving at a pace such that the listener probably won't notice the gimmicky device is being overused. Otherwise, everything is tasteful with vocal numbers that don't get too precious and just enough Benny Benassi-styled electro to let ...

| | Dion Deja Nu CD (2000)
Lively Mind
$11.69 A major influence on artists as varied as roots rocker Dave Edmunds, Lou Reed, and Bruce Springsteen (two of whose Lucky Town songs he covers here), Dion effectively mixes his tough yet delicate city-styled street corner harmonies with basic Chuck Berry chords to produce evocative tunes that, although embedded in the echoes of his youth, bubble with a soothing, low-key effervescence. Dion's perennially youthful voice delightfully swoops and swirls on the autobiographical "In New York City" and the Everly Brothers-styled "Hey Suzy," but it's on the Springsteen tracks, especially the beautiful a cappella ballad "If I Should Fall Behind," which seems like it was written with this arrangement in mind, that the concept fully clicks. The band chugs behind him with shabby charm, the backing vocalists are warm and ...
| | Aqua Velvets Nomad CD (1996)
Lively Mind
$10.59 Despite their watery name, the Aqua Velvets don't spend the bulk of this album riding the waves. In fact, the title and desert cover art seem to point in the opposite direction. And although they still obviously love reverb and twang, the band, led by guitarist Miles Corbin, proves it is more diverse than previous albums might indicate. Sure, there's plenty of Duane Eddy/Ventures licks, but the Aqua Velvets introduce them to a world music palette. This is surf-influenced music that transcends its previous limitations. To emphasize that, the disc kicks off with the spaghetti Western atmospherics of the title track before the group gets its collective feet wet in "Surf Nouveau"'s more straightforward, Shadows-style approach. But they really wander off the beach on the bongo-infused slow burn of "Snorkle Mask Replica," where backwards tapes provide an eerie backing for the multiple, overdubbed guitar solos. Ennio Morricone is referenced often here, ...

Color Me Badd was introduced to the world singing an acapella debut for Bon Jovi and then later had their first hit "I Wanna Sex You Up" on the New Jack City movie soundtrack. Following that hit, Color Me Badd sold over 3,000,000 records, were nominated for several Grammy awards, won several American Music awards, and garnered numerous top 40 hits including songs like "I Adore Mi Amore" and others. The group disbanded in the late 90's and each member has followed their own musical careers. Kevin is now proud to be making music that inspires, brings hope, and points people to knowing Christ. In Kevin's Words... As a child, I grew up in the church. My grandmother taught me a great deal about the Bible and Jesus Christ. Also, both of my grandfathers were pastors. This foundation kept me out of a lot of trouble I could have otherwise gotten into throughout the years. In high school, I teamed up with Mark Calderon, Bryan Abrams and Sam Watters. We later became professionally known as the 1990's multi-platinum selling singing group, Color Me Badd. For the eight years I spent traveling and performing with the group, we experienced all of the things that the world considered ...
