One of the most inclusively Mexican of Lila Downs's albums, this collection includes original material, covers of traditional Norteno music, cumbias, and corridos, and hip-hop cross fertilizations. There are songs in praise of tequila ("La Tequilera"), and the ingredients of mole ("La Cumbia Del Mole"), as well as the beautiful acoustic "Pa' Todo El Ano" and "La Noche De Mi Mal." All are suffused with Downs's characteristic vocal charisma, wit, and intelligence, as well as the consummate mastery of her musicians, and they demonstrate her growing confidence in interpreting the music of her birthplace.

La Cantina album
$11.69 Lila Downs' second release for Narada World reflects her continuing fascination with Mexican-American border culture. Considering her own mixed heritage (she is the child of a Mixtec Indian and an American), Downs has a special interest here, and it shows in the emotional, directed singing of Border (La Linea). On the first few tracks, Downs' thick, throaty voice is on a par with the Latina pioneers Lola Beltran or Toña La Negra, but she also displays an enviable range, switching over to thewail of a Mexican countrywoman on "Sale Sobrando" and "Cumbia Maya," then to the pure, heartfelt sound of American country for the moving "Pastures of Plenty/This Land Is Your Land." Though non-Spanish ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
La Cantina CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
La Cantina music CDs
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they embraced THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. And most importantly, unreconstructed ...

| | Dredg Catch Without Arms CD (2005)
La Cantina album
$8.49 Early on, critics often described Dredg as a metal group. However, the quartet has since matured into a hard-edged indie-rock ensemble that seeks diversity and refinement in its music. On CATCH WITHOUT ARMS, the band favors highly orchestrated parts, dense guitar riffs, and powerful drumming. Each song is based around memorable vocal hooks and sensitive lyrical content.
Many tracks on CATCH WITHOUT ARMS have a searching quality ...
| | Lucinda Williams West CD (2007) Digipak
La Cantina CD music
$11.45 Like Billie Holiday, John Lee Hooker, and Kurt Cobain, among others, Lucinda Williams is an artist with that certain difficult-to-define quality, the ability to channel the collective soul through a voice that is intimate, personal, and entirely her own. WEST, Williams's 2007 release, bears all the hallmarks of her best work: excellent songcraft, poetically tough lyrics, and her angel-on-morphine voice. As an album, it is her most consistent and appealing since 1998's CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD.
Williams's seemingly odd choice to work with mainstream pop producer Hal Willner works wonderfully. Willner built the album up from Williams's demo recordings, keeping her original vocals, and creating a sound that shimmers but never loses sight of the music's tough rootsiness. Yet it's Williams's searingly honest songwriting and achingly beautiful performances that make WEST so brilliant. Whether it's gutbucket blues ("Wrap ...
