This achingly beautiful story is about sudden catastrophe, hard-won redemption, and life-changing love. Arlis Howard and Mare Winningham star in this film with soundtrack by Doves, Cat Power, Sparklehorse, and Creeper Lagoon. Also included is the original theatrical trailer. Vincent Kartheiser stars as Mason, an intelligent and lonely teen from an unhappy family living in a small rural town, who finds brief happiness with an equally troubled girl named Danny (Taryn Manning)--until a series of accidents and fatal twists conspires to keep them apart. Mare Winningham, Arliss Howard, Blake Heron, and Michelle Forbes costar in this intimate, moving drama from promising first-time writer-director Mark Milgard. $12.85 The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films in favor of more serious fare; CAGLIOSTRO shows, however, that he is quite capable of delivering the goods in this genre. Based on the Lupin comics ...

$13.39 TV star Joshua Jackson (DAWSON'S CREEK) comes into his own in this well-crafted indie. He plays Duncan, the angry loser of his rundown Minneapolis neighborhood, whose inability to keep a job stems from losing his father 10 years before. He makes ends meet by loaning his apartment out to his philandering brother (Steven Pasquale) for trysts with his many mistresses. Duncan's hockey buddies keep him propped up, but the poor guy is rudderless. His grandparents (Donald Sutherland and Louise Fletcher) hook him up with their nurse, a wayward free spirit named Kate (Juliette Lewis). As the romance between them blossoms, the grandfather's health deteriorates and he begins contemplating suicide; then Kate gets an offer to move out to California, and Duncan faces some tough decisions. Directed by James Burke, this all plays out in a series of tightly blocked, gritty, low-key scenes which nail the depressing mundanity of a Minnesota winter and let the tight-knit ensemble of actors strike a fine balance between dour realism and date movie whimsy. The Brent Boyd script succinctly encompasses a wealth of geriatric and blue collar types, all of whom stretch out and grow and change as the film progresses. The well-rounded characterizations ...
