Although best known in the US for their later music, which combined Celtic roots with new age and pop influences, the Irish sibling group Clannad started as a traditional Irish folk group. This installment of the Winter Solstice series presents an of winter-themed recordings. In addition to usual Windham Hill artists such as George Winston and Liz Story, there are appearances by Marion Meadows, Todd Cochran, Narada recruit David Arkenstone, and the quartet of Brian Keane, Michael Manring, Paul McCandless and Lew Soloff. Perhaps surprisingly, the lack of traditional holiday material only enhances this disc's appeal, as do the first-rate performances. Strings and Things: Ubiquity Studio Sessions, Vol. 3, featuring 15 tracks to accompany as-yet-unmade films, Lee delves deeply into Bollywood and sitar groovescapes, finger-popping funk, and the strange, tense, atmospheric soundscapes that have become a near trademark.
