Aaron Watson looks too young and cheerful to know much about the honky tonk life, but one spin of San Angelo proves appearances can be deceiving. Watson manages to find a comfortable middle ground between the radio-friendly polish of new country and the tougher sounds that continue to find favor in his home state of Texas, and while the party anthem "Heyday Tonight" may open the album, it's harder-edged tunes about love and heartbreak like "Blame It on Me," "Haunted House," and the title cut that put the meat on this disc's bones. Watson wrote the bulk of the album's 13 songs, with the other selections culled from the songbooks of Willie Nelson, Buddy Holly, Jim Lauderdale, and Bruce Robison, and the fact that Watson's songs don't sound woefully inadequate in comparison says a lot about his talent -- maybe "All American Country Girl" and "Good Thing Going" are a bit lightweight, but "Except for Jessie" is a moving tribute to Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter, and "Haunted House" is a fine and evocative portrait of a love gone sour. Ray Benson's production is clean but straightforward, and the pickers deliver the goods with class to spare. San Angelo isn't always up to the level of Aaron Watson's influences, but it's modern country music with the heart and soul of classic Lone Star sounds, and it's the work of a young man with plenty of potential. ~ Mark Deming

R.I.D.E., the title of Trick Pony's third album, stands for "Rebellious Individuals Delivering Entertainment." Of course, in 2000's Nashville, rebelling could often mean playing straight-up old-school country while not taking oneself too seriously, two pursuits at which Trick Pony excels. A slice of good-time barroom country rock, R.I.D.E. manages to sound staunchly traditional while never sticking too close to a formula. Primary lead vocalist Heidi Newfield comes off like a bawdy mix of Tanya Tucker, Loretta Lynn, and Mae West, delivering the pure honky-tonk of "Ain't Wastin' Good Whiskey On You" and the tears-in-your-beer emotion of "When I Fall" with equal panache. It's guitarist Keith Burns, however, who delivers the record's most accessible song with "Sad City," which features a guest vocal from Hootie & The Blowfish's Darius Rucker. A mix of sawdust, sweat, and jumbotron-ready party spirit, this R.I.D.E. is guaranteed to be a wild one.

After the crossover effort of 2004's SPEND MY TIME, first-wave new traditionalist Clint Black returns to his roots on 2005's DRINKIN' SONGS & OTHER LOGIC. As the title suggests, this is a barroom-themed album, with a heavy dose of honky tonk that will undoubtedly make purists happy, and will make everyone else want to pop open a cold one. From the barroom boogie of the opening title track to the steel guitar-sweetened "Heartaches" to cry-in-your-beer ballads like "Go It Alone," DRINKIN' SONGS is Black's most solid effort in a long while.
At times Black missteps both musically and thematically. "Too Much Rock," for example, with its plodding tempo and its unnecessary and somewhat silly protest message against rock music, feels out of keeping with the album's feel. With his beetle brows, his occasional penchant for lyrics dealing with damnation and salvation, and his startlingly deep and resonant voice, you might be forgiven for mistaking Dale Watson for a honky tonk version of Nick Cave. Then again, the whole idea of a honky tonk version of Nick Cave is weird enough that maybe you wouldn't be forgiven after all. And besides, for all of his themes of heartbreak and loneliness, Watson is clearly having much more fun than Cave ever has, and this odds-and-sods collection (containing "some old songs that I had written but never recorded and have received many requests for at live shows") finds him having even more fun than usual, with tunes that he takes just seriously enough to keep in the repertoire but not seriously enough to weigh them down. Hence the barroom genius of songs like "It Hurts So Good" and the joyfully anguished "Sit and Drink and Cry," and the rip-roaring Cajun two-step of "I Ain't Been Right, Since I Been Left." Country singer Ty Herndon is back in the studio after a six-year break. Yeah, there was a Christmas record a couple of years back, but this is the first time the Meridian, Mississippi wonder has done an honest to goodness modern country record in nearly seven years. Herndon hit the charts and the road in a fury during the mid-'90s, and his demons hit back hard. Right: Herndon had a hellhound on his trail. Right About Now is one of those records that a man makes when he feels he has everything to prove. On the Jackson/Titan independent label (which is distributed by Fontana), Herndon lays out 11 new songs with help from songwriters like producer Darrell Brown, Keith Urban, Jess Cates, Beth Nielsen Chapman and others. The opener, written by Brown, Radney Foster, and Urban is a downtempo modern country rocker turned personal anthem. Herndon's voice is not only unchanged from his missing years, it's stronger, his phrasing is tighter and more expressive, and his manner of handling a song is entirely his own. "You Still Own Me" opens with a fiddle and a banjo and a shuffling snare. It's modern country at its best. This is one of those tracks that if the radio programmers have guts and his label can come up with the cash for a video (Trey Fanjoy should direct it, if there's any justice) it's all but a guaranteed hit.
