Personnel: Mimi Fox (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Xavier Davis (piano); Harvie S (bass guitar); Billy Hart (drum); Michaelle Goerlitz (percussion). For the uninitiated, it's understandable to assume that the artists on Steve Vai's record label, Favored Nations, must be from the same hard-rocking, six-string shredding variety. But this is certainly not the case, as evidenced by the 2006 double-disc release by Mimi Fox, Perpetually Hip. A Bay Area-based guitarist, Fox is a jazz guitarist through and through -- and not fusion, either, as her main influences include such jazz greats as Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, and Grant Green. On Perpetually Hip, Fox follows a guideline for each disc -- the first sees Fox playing alongside a trio of New York musicians (pianist Xavier Davis, bassist Harvie S., and drummer Billy Hart), as the quartet mixes a few Fox originals with covers. The second disc, on the other hand, is solo, and comprised solely of interpretations of jazz standards. No flashy tricks here, just fantastically clean jazz playing, as evidenced by such disc one standouts as the album-opening title track and "While Bangkok Sleeps," as well such disc two highlights as Duke Ellington's "Caravan" and George Gershwin's "Someone to Watch Over Me." The respected jazz publication Down Beat has been praising Fox's talents for years now (named "Rising Star" for three consecutive years), and it all comes together for the guitarist on Perpetually Hip. ~ Greg PratoDown Beat (p.63) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "It's the solo setting of the second disc where Fox transcends all expectations. Here, 'Caravan' finds a striking new pace in the appropriately painted Latin hues of Fox's interpretation." JazzTimes (p.73) - "[I]t's her writing that yields the most interest. The opening title track, a dark waltz, has some surprising twists in the bridge." Mimi Fox Perpetually Hip Songs Perpetually Hip Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Exceptional musicianship I consider Mimi Fox an exceptional musician with lots of technique and improvisational creativity. The 1st disc in the album where she is performing with other musicians really showcases her improvisational skills. I know she took lessons from and borrowed a lot from the late great Joe Pass and it really comes out on the 2nd disc when she's playing solo guitar. Like all great jazz musicians, you borrow elements from other musicians but you make it your own. Mimi has succeeded in making it her own. Mimi Swings! This is a 2 CD set of excellent, straight-ahead jazz guitar.
Disc 1 has Mimi playing in primarily a band setting. Harvie S. is on bass, Billy Hart on Drums and the marvelous Xavier Davis is "tickling the ivories".
Disc 2 is just Mimi playing some very beautiful solo guitar.
Mimi's playing is crisp, clear and melodic throughout. If you like Jazz guitar in the style of Joe Pass and Pat Metheny, then you won't be disappointed by this 2 CD set.

you need to add more stars for this cd if you want a cd set that encompasses what jazz guitar is all about then stop reading and order this cd. its straight-ahead, backwards, and up-side-down guitar genius. if you like blazing melodic runs than pop in the first cd. if your a fan of solo guitar then throw in the second cd, and wait to be amazed. this set is first class on every dimension. i don't give praise like this for fun, i give it for content. i'm an old school advocate, i like joe pass, johnny smith, wes mongomery and tal farlow. mimi fox has been added to my list of favorite jazz heroes. if you want to renew your lust for innovative and soulful jazz, let mimi' guitar whisper into your ear. $14.99 "This may be the finest solo jazz guitar playing I have ever heard." - Jim Josselyn, Cadence Magazine. Ferociously talented, Mimi Fox is world renowned for her shimmering chords, dazzling facility, and gorgeous sensitivity. She brings a fresh and fluent
Solo performer: Mimi Fox (guitar). Engineers: Celso Alberti, Brian Walker, Scott Adler. Recorded live at The Jazz School, Berkeley, California on August 8, 1999 and at Moon Dog Studios, Oakland, CA on March 6, 2001. Making a solo guitar album work is not an easy task. It's not enough to be a technical wizard; veteran Mimi Fox is that and more. You also have to be able to blend a tasteful play list, sensitivity to the music, enough fresh ideas so as not to become dull, and a certain flamboyance (but not so much that it overwhelms the listener). Fox achieves all of that and more on her fourth album as a leader. The play list is made up of standards -- not only ...
| | Wynton Marsalis Live At The House Of Tribes CD (2005)
Perpetually Hip
$13.65 Live at the House of Tribes documents trumpeter Wynton Marsalis performing with his sextet at the intimate community theater space in New York City on December 15, 2002. Apparently an annual ritual of sorts for Marsalis, the performance makes for one of his best live recordings since 1986's stellar Live at Blues Alley. Backed by a slightly altered lineup from his 2005 Blue Note studio debut, The Magic Hour, Marsalis gains first-class support from alto saxophonist Wessel Anderson, pianist Eric Lewis, drummer Joe Farnsworth, bassist Kengo Nakamura, and percussionist Orlando Q. Rodriguez. Special mention must be made of Robert Rucker for his highly energetic tambourine performance on the New Orleans "2nd Line" finale. New Orleans jazz aficionados may recognize this tune as "Joe Avery's Blues" and based on the cheering, clapping, and ...
