If you thought Anthrax had a tough time defending their band moniker in the aftermath of 9/11, try walking in Caliban's shoes. But one measly letter separates the German quintet from premature dismissal by millions of dyslexics -- who knew that taking your name from a minor Shakespearian character would lead to such controversy? Luckily for Caliban, their long years of service to melodic metalcore -- a genre they helped pioneer -- have helped them amass more than enough fans to circumvent this problematic coincidence. That pioneering status also explains why the band's fifth full album, 2006's The Undying Darkness, gives little thought to drastic sonic reinvention, but focuses instead on their chosen style's most essential core values -- let their followers come up with novel new ideas! Consequently, Caliban's songs for this occasion remain remarkably aware of their commercial potential -- no matter how extreme some of their passages may be. In fact, it's the stark contrast between those bone-crushing riffs and soul-lifting harmonies, Cookie Monster growls and soaring clean vocals, that fuels the very best among them (see "It's Our Burden to Bleed," "My Fiction Beauty," and "No More 2nd Chances"). And speaking of alternating vocal styles, besides allowing the use of parentheses in your lyric sheet (cool!), their other major advantage is helping to broaden frontman Andy Dörner's almost exclusively first-person narratives, thereby making "Song About Killing" and "I Refuse to Keep on Living..." all the more terrifying, and "I Rape Myself" and "Sick of Running Away" a little less whiney. Finally, there's an astoundingly uncompromising death metal cover of Björk's "Army of Me" (featuring additional vocals by Tanja Keilen) adding that one, unexpected little surprise to help round out Caliban's latest solid effort. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia Caliban Undying Darkness Songs Undying Darkness Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Wow.. Undying Darkness album
$6.49 Possessing metal pipes like few before him, leonine Steelheart yelper Michael Matijevic scarred the airwaves forever when he hammered the simply unmatchable chorus of the hairball "I'll Never Let You Go": ludicrous and sublime, akin to Whitney Houston hitting the hot spot in "I Will Always Love You." The opening strands of "Everybody Loves Eileen" bring Ratt out of the cellar before the cut curls into a pop n' fresh roller coaster ride. The remainders on this ridiculous dish are also overlong examples of excess but not as memorable, paying homage to Whitesnake and other flailing stylistic ventures. "I'll Never Let You Go" is available on some quality collections and no aficionado of poodle pomp should let that song go, otherwise leave Steelheart in peace with the music it helped lay to rest. ~ Doug Stone

| | All That Remains This Darkened Heart CD (2004)
Undying Darkness CD music
$9.79 Judging from just the first song on This Darkened Heart, one is tempted to immediately rank All That Remains among the top tier of current Swedish-influenced American hardcore-metal bands (and there are a lot of them). The dual-guitar interplay of Oli Herbert and Mike Martin is intricate and impressive, and their classically tinged riff-writing yields at least a slight distinction from their many At the Gates-influenced contemporaries. However, as early as the second ...

| | Chris Murphy Juniper CD (2005)
Undying Darkness songs
$12.49 Chris Murphy plays in so many different styles that it makes sense that Kufala Recordings chose to release an entire series of thematically connected albums at once rather than try to cover all the bases on one. Juniper, as the "Fiddle Music" subtitle implies, is the folk-based set, but it's not a traditionalist album. Closer in concept and execution to Eliza Carthy's Red Rice set than anything else, Juniper sets folk-based fiddle forms against a folk-rock backing that's sort of an Americanized version of the veddy British Fairport Convention. At its best, as on the manic bluegrass-inspired opener, "Into the Wild," the results are an exciting instrumental take on folk-rock. At times, however, the equation leans a little too much to the rock side, with the result that songs like "The Painted Desert" and "Cora Street" sound more like the backing tracks for Dixie Chicks songs that somebody forgot to add the vocals to. Overall, however, Juniper is an entertaining listen. ~ Stewart Mason
"He rips through his fiddle with such energetic sounds capable of giving any square dancer a heart attack on the dance floor and then reviving them long enough to twirl around for more." Jason Terrill, Folkwax"I can almost see the fire flying from his fingertips on these 15 original instrumentals that are filled with emotional electricity...I hear influences of Celtic, old-time, bluegrass and jazz in his music, and he demonstrates a technical mastery of his fiddle."- Joe Ross, Bluegrass Works"...a talented violinist whose polished style drips freely from anything he plays, whether bass-fueled trance or bucolic hymns."-Jamie Lee, Jambands Online"Chris Murphy has got to be one on the best Violin/Fiddle masters that has walked this earth. And his new CD release Juniper ...
