Boston: Brad Delp (vocals); Tom Scholz (guitar, organ); Barry Goudreau (guitar); Fran Sheenan (bass); Sib Hassian (drums). Recorded at Foxglove Studios, Watertown, Massachusetts; Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California; The Record Plant, Los Angeles, California between 1975 and 1976. Boston: Brad Delp (vocals); Tom Scholz (guitar, bass guitar); Barry Goudreau (guitar); Fran Sheehan (bass guitar); Sib Hashian (drums). Boston is one of the best-selling albums of all time, and deservedly so. Because of the rise of disco and punk, FM rock radio seemed all but dead until the rise of acts like Boston, Tom Petty, and Bruce Springsteen. Nearly every song on Boston's debut album could still be heard on classic rock radio decades later due to the strong vocals of Brad Delp and unique guitar sound of Tom Scholz. Tom Scholz, who wrote most of the songs, was a studio wizard and used self-designed equipment such as 12-track recording devices to come up with an anthemic "arena rock" sound before the term was even coined. The sound was hard rock, but the layered melodies and harmonics reveal the work of a master craftsman. While much has been written about the sound of the album, the lyrics are often overlooked. There are songs about their rise from a bar band ("Rock and Roll Band") as well as fond remembrances of summers gone by ("More Than a Feeling"). Boston is essential for any fan of classic rock, and the album marks the re-emergence of the genre in the 1970s. ~ Vik Iyengar Recorded on a simple 12-track recorder as a demo, it was so good that the record company released it. Tom Scholz masterminded the project in his spare time; little did he know that this record came to define AOR, and would become a hi-fi store standard demo disc. Since that time, this record-breaking debut has sold 15 million copies in its homeland. Sholtz put so much effort into making it, he has managed only three further records in 22 years. "More Than A Feeling" still chills in a corny sort of way and the harmonies are pretty impressive. Boston
$9.39 UK budget-price compilation for the Motown recording act that scored over 40 hits in the R&B Top 40 charts. 19 tracks including 'City Of Angels', 'Free Press', 'Night Life', 'SMOG', 'Gemini', 'Do It Baby' and more.
The 18-track COLLECTION focuses on the 1970s work by the Miracles folloing Smokey Robinson's departure for a solo career, including the disco smash "Love Machine." While a deeper dip into the Miracles' first release (Renaissance) wouldn't have hurt, The Essential Collection is still a fine overview of their post-Smokey Robinson recordings on Motown with Billy Griffin. The CD relies heavily on cuts from their best-selling City of Angels album: "Waldo Roderick DeHammersmith," "My Name Is Michael," the dreamy "Smog," the controversial "Ain't Nobody Straight in L. A.," and their number one smash "Love Machine." Other gimmes are "Do It Baby," "What Is a Heart Good For," and the super-classy "Don't Let It End (Til You Let It Begin)." Ronnie White's seldom-used (as a lead) second tenor is refreshing and provides a good contrast to Griffin's delicate first tenor on many tracks. ~ Andrew Hamilton

Boston
$6.75 Boston: Brad Delp (vocals); Tom Scholz (guitar, piano, organ, bass); Barry Goudreau (guitar, percussion); Fran Sheehan (bass, percussion); Sib Hashian (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Cindy, Gloria, Rob, Tom (percussion). Recorded at Tom Scholz' Hideaway Studio and Northern Studio, Maynard, Massachusetts. Boston: Brad Delp (vocals); Tom Scholz (guitar, bass guitar); Barry Goudreau (guitar); Fran Sheehan (bass guitar); Sib Hashian (drums). The follow-up to Boston's mega-hit first album, Boston, Don't Look Back took two long years to complete, and it's hard to figure out why because it's almost exactly the same as their debut. The guitars still sound like they are being fed through computers and stacked into great walls of sound by robots, lead singer Brad Delp still sounds like he is ripping his throat out, and the harmony vocals still sound like a choir of androids warbling angelically. Most importantly, the songs are overflowing with hooks, there are plenty of riffs to air guitar to, and the songs stick in your head like dirt on a dog. The main difference lies in the semi-melancholy tone of the record. Boston was a nonstop party of a record but one look ...

| | Iggy And The Stooges Raw Power (Millennium) CD (1973) (Import) Netherlands
Boston
$10.05 Remastered limited-edition digipak release. In 1972, the Stooges were near the point of collapse when David Bowie's management team, MainMan, took a chance on the band at Bowie's behest. By this point, guitarist Ron Asheton and bassist Dave Alexander had been edged out of the picture, and James Williamson had signed on as Iggy's new guitar mangler; Asheton rejoined the band shortly before recording commenced on Raw Power, but was forced to play second fiddle to Williamson as bassist. By most accounts, tensions were high during the recording of Raw Power, and the album sounds like the work of a band on its last legs -- though rather than grinding to a halt, Iggy & the Stooges appeared ready to explode like an ammunition dump. From a technical standpoint, Williamson was a more gifted guitar player than Asheton (not that that was ever the point), but his sheets of metallic fuzz were still more basic (and punishing) than what anyone was used to in 1973, while Ron Asheton played his bass like a weapon of revenge, and his brother Scott Asheton remained a powerhouse behind the drums. But the most remarkable change came from the singer; Raw Power revealed Iggy as a howling, smirking, lunatic genius. Whether quietly brooding ("Gimme Danger") or inviting the apocalypse ("Search and Destroy"), Iggy had never sounded quite so focused as he did here, and his lyrics displayed an intensity that was more than a bit disquieting. In many ways, almost all Raw Power has in common with the two Stooges albums that preceded it is its primal sound, but while the Stooges once sounded like the wildest (and weirdest) ...
