Big Joe Turner Joe Turner/Rockin' the Blues CD (2000)
Boogie Woogie: The Warner Bros. Recordings CD music Includes original release liner notes by Guy Remark & Gary Kramer.
Presenting both JOE TURNER and ROCKIN' THE BLUES on one CD, this Collectables compilation is a quality double shot of Big Joe Turner's late-1950s output for Atlantic Records. Among the 28 tracks featured are the raucous "Shake, Rattle & Roll" (made famous by Bill Haley & the Comets), the boisterous "Well All Right," and the uplifting "The Chicken and the Hawk," all marked by careening piano lines and swinging rhythms. The latter part of the disc finds Turner balancing rock & roll tunes with straight-up blues numbers, belting out classics such as the heartsick "Chains of Love" and the melancholy "Trouble in Mind." Every song here benefits from Turner's commanding voice, which carries a sound as large as his massive frame. Although Turner's earlier recordings may have been more influential, these sessions, some of his last for Atlantic, showcase the vocalist as a seasoned performer at the top of his game.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

Johnnie Taylor One Step Beyond CD (1971)
Boogie Woogie: The Warner Bros. Recordings songs Cut in the middle of Taylor's late-'60s and early-'70s stay at Stax, One Step Beyond qualifies as one of the singer's best LPs. Captured in his Southern soul prime, Taylor lets loose on fine mix of gospel-inspired ballads ("I Don't Want to Lose You"), countrified mid-tempo burners ("Party Life"), and breezy stings-and-horns soul ("Will You Love Me Forever"). And, yes, there are such unforgettable hits as "I Am Somebody" and an amazing reading of the jazz standard "Time After Time." A must-have for all Taylor fans. ~ Stephen Cook
Includes liner notes by Ron Bowman.
Recorded in 1970.
Personnel: Johnnie Taylor (vocals); Eddie Hinton, Steve Cropper (guitar); Rudy Robinson, Barry Beckett (keyboards); Roger Hawkins (drums).

REVIEWS: MUSIC MONTHLY/NATIONAL BEAT'Who Are These People?'-That was my exact reaction when I first glanced at the CD cover. What kind of name is that for a band? It sounds like a how-to-do-it-yourself manual on catching, cleaning, and cooking fish. I thought for sure they'd be another Seattle grunge band.
I was dead wrong. Trout Fishing in America are actually a folk duo whoplace heavy emphasis on bass and acoustic guitar. The bass in particular ismixed in such a way that all the songs have a strong rhythmic quality to them. Quite a change from the normal folk stuff. Most of the songs seem to fall under the folk rock heading, but out of the blue comes a tune or twothat will surprise you. My personal favorite is 'Serious About You', which has a soulish beat to it. Horns blast out giving a '60s feel, but what instrument takes the solo? The acoustic guitar does, thereby retaining that folk edge. Still, I could see Jr. Cline and the Recliners covering it. Another interesting song is entitled 'Breakfast Blues'--a ditty loaded with puns galore about breakfast food, some so bad you just have to laugh.
This might be a new direction for folk music. Gone are the days when there would be just one person and his guitar singing mournful odes about the world's injustices. Now you get duos with strange names singing about flapjacks. The times they are a' changin' indeed.
