Combination
$14.49 Recorded between 1966 & 1968. Includes liner notes by Dave Hendley.
Positioned between the busy pulse of ska and the slower certainty of reggae, rocksteady combined some of the strengths and attributes of both during its brief Jamaican run between 1966 and 1968. The less kinetic ...

| | Bob Marley Uprising CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Combination
$11.05 Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (2001, Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
Bob Marley generated a staggering number of great records during his brief time in the world's spotlight. Although he cut his first recordings in the early 1960s, it was not until the 1973 release of CATCH A FIRE that Marley and the Wailers became international stars. Eight years later Marley was dead, a victim of cancer. In between, he recorded eight studio albums and several live albums, all of excellent quality.
UPRISING is Marley's final album, and it's also one of his best. As on all his recordings, Marley's writing displays the gift for melody that helped non-Jamaican audiences gain access to his music even when he was singing about the details of island life and the doctrine of Rastafarianism. The most popular tracks here, "Could You Be Loved" and "Redemption Song," are pop masterpieces, but so too are lesser ...

| | Peter Tosh Bush Doctor CD (1978) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Combination
$8.85 Keith Sterling (keyboards); Sly Dunbar (drums, percussion); Larry McDonald, Sticky (percussion).
From his days as one of the original Wailers in the '60s until his violent death at the hands of thieves in 1987, Peter Tosh was one of Jamaican music's most outspoken and controversial artists. Though his former partner Bob Marley never shied away from political or social statements himself, Tosh eschewed Marley's gift for metaphor and parable in favor of such explicitly political slogans as the legendary "Legalize It."
BUSH DOCTOR, widely considered one of Tosh's best solo albums, features the similarly plain-spoken title track, which became one of his signature songs, the seething "Dem Ha Fe Get A Beatin'," and the devotionally Rasta "Soon Come" and "Creation." Other tracks, like "Stand Firm" and "I'm The Toughest," are more general statements of defiance ...
| | Mighty Mighty Bosstones Question The Answers CD (1994)
Combination
$7.39 As the music industry's fixation with the commercial possibilities of all things "alternative" grows, many record companies look towards punk's glory days of the late 70's and the mid-80's for divine inspiration.
Towards that end, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, a hard-working octet from Boston, snugly fit the niche. They borrowed from England's Two-Tone movement (which punkified ska, an off-shoot of reggae), and from Los Angeles' punk-funk stew (which produced such hybrid-happy acts as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and ...

| | Augustus Pablo King David's Melody CD (1983)
Combination
$13.89 Originally released in 1983 on his own Rockers imprint, Augustus Pablo's King David's Melody collects singles from the years 1975-1982. The liner notes do a good job of pointing out that most of the tracks are considered instrumentals instead of dubs, which only means Pablo's more responsible for the melodies and structures of the songs than usual. The serene, relaxed, and otherworldly feelings of Pablo's dub material is well represented, and to a lesser extent, the trippy twists and turns, but they are more modest and mostly on the bonus tracks. The inspiration for the overall positive and supremely spiritual feel to the collection is right in the title. Rastafarian Pablo is referencing spiritual leader Haile Selassie's claim to be descended from King David, a king of ancient Israel who could sooth the soul with his flute and harp. Pablo does the same here with his melodica and occasional keyboards. The easy-rolling title track, the coolly cheerful "Mr. Bassie," and the airy "Cornerstone Dub" all support the original ...
| | Maggie Bell Suicide Sal CD (1975) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Limited Edition; Japan
Combination
$43.35 Maggie Bell bears more than a passing resemblance to the young, "Gasoline Alley"-era Rod Stewart, in appearance, voice, and musical preferences. Both had shaggy, dirty blonde hair, both have raspy, textured vocal styles, and both were recording soul-tinged rock & roll albums in the early 1970s. Bell had achieved some recognition as the singer of Stone the Crows, then increased her profile with her solo albums, of which 1975's SUICIDE SAL is her best.
The album contains the music hall-influenced title track and several covers, including the Beatles' "I Saw Her Standing There" and Free's "Wishing Well." The rootsy, blues-rock vibe of SUICIDE SAL sounds like many other albums of the era, but Bell's gospel-tinged, sandpapery voice and the appearance of Jimmy Page on guitar make the whole outing worthwhile.
The success of Angel Air's series of Maggie Bell reissues can be easily judged by the Scottish singer's return to the U.K. after residing for years abroad, a planned autobiography, and her intention of touring. Although critically feted in the U.K., Bell, both solo and with her former band Stone the Crows, never quite achieved the commercial breakthrough everyone had so expected. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride, Bell's recording career was punctuated by a sole Stone the Crows charting album. With that band's demise in 1973, the soul singer went solo, releasing the (again) critically acclaimed Queen of the Night album, with 1975's Suicide Sal following. A tougher, more energized set than its predecessor, Sal's electrifying live feel reflects the incendiary stage shows Bell and her new backing band had been playing in the intervening time between recordings. The two bonus tracks, recorded at a gig later that year, capture their live ferocity. Intriguingly, the funky, fiery title track, an homage to Bell's Aunt, a music hall star, is one of only two originals on this set. The second, the lavishly bluesy "If You Don't Know" was penned by band keyboardist Pete Wingfield, and boasts a guesting Jimmy Page on guitar. The storming "Coming ...
