Since violinist Jenny Scheinman relocated to New York from the Bay Area, her career has been gaining momentum, not least through appearances with the likes of Bill Frisell, Norah Jones, and Vinicius Cantuaria. Now, with the imprimatur of John Zorn's Tzadik label, Scheinman presents her take on "radical Jewish culture" with The Rabbi's Lover, leading a quintet with Russ Johnson on trumpet, Adam Levy on guitar, Greg Cohen or Trevor Dunn on bass, and Kenny Wollesen on drums. The program consists of four full-length originals, three shorter vignettes, and two traditional pieces, all infused with sensuousness and eclectic daring. "The Shofar Place," a longer, modern cut inspired by a line from Paul Celan, is a high point. Here, the accordionist from the chamber-folk-jazz group Tin Hat Trio makes his solo debut on saxophonist/composer John Zorn's Tzadik record label. With this release, Rob Burger displays his multi-instrumentalist propensities, backed by the rock-solid rhythm section of drummer/percussionist Kenny Wollesen and bassist Greg Cohen. Throughout this outing, the artist uses unconventional instruments such as a claviola, an old Casio electronic keyboard, prepared piano, marxophone, and other incarnations of musicality. Simply put, Burger churns out an organic-sounding vibe on pieces spanning Jewish traditionalism minced with memorable melodies and feisty soloing endeavors. He displays wit and vigor amid a textural and multi-layered schema, augmented by the rhythm section's rumbling backbeats. On UNSPEAKABLE, Bill Frisell blends his distinctively lush, cerebral guitar style with the easy feel of his 1990s Americana-themed albums and a bit of the avant-garde sensibility of his '80s work, while never directly referencing either of these phases. In fact, the overall sound of UNSPEAKABLE is something new for Frisell--with a few notable exceptions, the record leans toward groove-heavy jams. The presence of horns, Adam Dorn's synthesizer, and the 858 Strings (a violin/viola/cello trio employed throughout the album for accent and effect) brings to mind, at times, the orchestrated, cinematic funk of '70s-era Isaac Hayes ("White Fang"), and, at others, '60s lounge music ("Del Close").
But this is not to say that Frisell has discarded his trademark avant-chamber sensibility. On "D. Sharpe" and "Gregory C.," he creates deeply introspective, atmospheric pieces with help from the 858 Strings and Hal Willner's turntables and samples. When Foday Musa Suso teamed with drummer Hamid Drake in the `80s to form the Mandingo Griot Society, the usage of kora and the American drum kit was a novelty, and successfully but precariously placed the traditions of African village music and jazz oriented polyrhythms in a new place. Suso and the veteran drummer Jack DeJohnette team up in duets that do not juxtapose, but complement the rhythmic strengths of the different instruments, creating a language of their own.
