Bellydance Treasures songs
$6.79 (MP3 Available for Download) The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessor/counterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. From the opening "These Eyes," with its orchestral strings and Zombies-like baroque pop feel to the classic AOR crunge of "American Woman," the Guess Who played a wide variety of music. It is sometimes hard to believe that the same group that brought the world the jazzy "Undun" and the CS&N-ish hippie anthem "Share the Land" is also responsible for the rocking "No Time." This 11-track collection paints a very entertaining picture of a mutli-talented band and is a perfect introduction for the casual fan. ~ Gary Hill and Tim Sendra

| | Israel Iz Kamakawiwo'Ole Alone In Iz World CD (2001)
Bellydance Treasures CD music
$13.29 While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those who mourn his passing will be gladdened by the posthumous release of ALONE IN IZ WORLD, compiled from various recording session outtakes.
While one might expect a big, deep sound to emanate from a gargantuan-sized body like that of Iz, the hefty singer actually possessed a gorgeous, fragile tenor voice full of tenderness and delicacy. That voice is put to use here on tunes that alternate between voice-and-ukelele solo performances (Iz was no slouch on the uke) and more fully arranged tunes enhanced after the singer's death. Whether crooning in his native tongue or in English, Iz cuts right through to the heart of the listener with his pure, emotive tone.

| | Manitas De Plata Flaming Flamenco CD (1997)
Bellydance Treasures album
$8.09 (MP3 Available for Download) This album of discount flamenco was released by the Legacy International label. Manitas de Plata is billed by the liner notes as the "World's Greatest Flamenco Guitarist" (apparently ignoring players such as Tomatito and Paco de Lucía). While there's some solid playing from the star here, it's certainly not up to the title granted him. The guitar is heavily overshadowed by his shouts and accompanying jaleos and palmas. The guitar work isn't bad, but it's nothing compared to the key players of the genre. The sound quality adds to the misery of the album as well, as everything is accompanied by a slight scratchiness. While some ...

| | Cornelius Brothers & Sister Ros Classic Masters CD (2002)
Bellydance Treasures MP3 Album
$6.45 Recorded between 1971 & 1973. Includes liner notes by A. Scott Galloway.
Cornelius Brothers & Sister Rose's edition of Capitol's Classic Masters series finds the smooth soul group in prime form. Their hits are here -- "Treat Her Like a Lady," "Too Late to Turn Back Now," "Don't Ever Be Lonely" -- along with some singles that only made an impact on the R&B charts, as well as a few album tracks. The three big singles are undoubtedly the best songs here, with some of the secondary material running toward a supper club feel, but even the weaker moments have a pleasant sound reminiscent of the hits -- pleasant enough, it ...
