For a band that's known worldwide as the premier purveyors of goth-rock gloom and doom (though hardly incapable of sparkling pop gems), it's no small thing to identify a particular album as their darkest, most disturbing sonic statement. Nevertheless, PORNOGRAPHY surely fills the bill. Reportedly created during a time of great psychological upheaval for group leader Robert Smith, it's a gloriously no-holds-barred existential angst-fest, from the very first line, "It doesn't matter if we all die." Not since Leonard Cohen's SONGS OF LOVE AND HATE had despair been so lovingly ladled into album form, but it's not just Smith's Prozac prescription that was upped during these sessions. His lyrical approach expanded as well, incorporating more stream-of-consciousness poetic imagery. And the rhythmic attack of bassist Simon Gallup and drummer Lol Tolhurst reached new heights of propulsiveness and viscerality as well, whether pounding out a churning syncopation on "The Hanging Garden" or delivering the heavy-hammered nail in the coffin on "A Short Term Effect."
Recorded at Rak Studio One, London, England.
The Cure: Robert Smith (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Simon Gallup (keyboards, bass); Laurence Tolhurst (keyboards, drums).
Engineers: Phil Thornally, Mike Nocito, Robert Smith.
Rolling Stone (p.79) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[T]his goth milestone brings the heaviness of metal without its clich‚s. Smith wails, guitars blare and drums pound in an echo-laden maelstrom of decay and loathing..." Spin (p.102) - "Where all aspiring new-wavers go to study enunciation." Spin (p.109) - "[A] druggy steel-cage match between death-disco drums and tarnished hooks that's somehow still fun to shimmy to." Q (12/99, p.171) - Included in Q Magazine's Best Gothic Albums Of All Time - "...something uniquely, irresistibly nasty....It made sense of the abject horror of those mock A levels." Uncut (p.124) - 5 stars out of 5 - "Smith's unearthed demos and live tracks from this period do not prepare you for the pure shock and awe of PORNOGRAPHY. Even today, nothing can." NME (Magazine) (8/12/00, p.29) - Ranked #24 in The NME "Top 30 Heartbreak Albums" - "...Fueled by LSD, [it] is a dense, unrelenting wall of ugly noise..." | | Cure Faith CD (1981) Remastered
Pornography music CDs
$9.09 If you ever observed (or were) a pale depressed-looking teenager dressed entirely in black, sitting in the corner scribbling frantically into a marble bound notebook, then you already understand the Cure. In the 1980s, the Cure provided the soundtrack for an entire generation of misfit toys, and if SEVENTEEN SECONDS was a wake-up call for the dispossessed, FAITH is the daily affirmation. Scaled back down to a three-piece with the loss of keyboardist Hartley, the Cure is a lean, mean fighting machine, ready to rumble.
"Rumble" is the best way to describe the propulsive bass playing of Simon Gallup, whose rolling bass anchors both mid-tempo numbers like "The Drowning Man" and faster fare such as "Primary." ...
| | Cure Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me CD (1987) Reissue
Pornography songs
$9.29 This hefty double album often sounds more like a compilation than a coherent whole, with musical ideas bouncing frantically back and forth. Nevertheless, in typical Cure style, KISS ME, KISS ME, KISS ME successfully combines catchy pop with bitter despair. Through 17 immensely sensual songs, Robert Smith ...

| | Julie Driscoll Kind Of Love In 1967-1971 CD (2004)
Pornography album
$17.75 This 21-track collection is not the only compilation to showcase the compelling and formidable collaboration between the outrageously talented vocalist Julie Driscoll (now Tippetts) and composer, keyboard ace, bandleader, and Renaissance man Brian Auger of Oblivion Express fame when they played together in the band Trinity. It is, however, the only one on the market that offers Driscoll's earlier and later solo material as the bookends of her time with Auger and for that -- as well as its lovely package and wonderfully remastered sound -- it is more than noteworthy. The story starts in 1967 with Driscoll's first single as a Brit psychedelic soul chanteuse covering Brian Godding's "I Know You Love Me Not" on the A-side and Randy Newman's "If You Should Ever Leave Me" on the flip. Add to this the first-ever recorded singles by Driscoll and Auger's Trinity -- 1968's "Save Me, Pt. 1," the band's first and biggest hit in a cover of Bob Dylan's "This Wheel's On Fire," and this collection's title track, which was the B-side. Sonically, the layered, spooky strings and strolling funky bassline on the Dylan tune make a beautiful pillow for Auger's B-3 and a nice bed for Driscoll's stunning vocals. All the psychedelic treatments on the vocals do not detract from the power in her voice. Next up are six cuts from 1968's Open, most notably the group's awesome cover of Donovan's "Season of the Witch." A not-so-well-known single from later that year, a cover of David Ackles' "Road to Cairo," and the Driscoll/Auger funky soul original "Shadows of You" are also here. Also here are six tracks taken from Streetnoise, the second and last album Trinity recorded with Driscoll, originally issued as a double LP. These cuts focus on the true strengths from that issue, including covers of Richie Havens' "Indian Rope Man," the Nina Simone arrangement of "Take Me to the Water," Driscoll's "A Word About Colour," and a stunning cover of Laura Nyro's "Save the Country." This compilation's ...
| | Ditty Twisters Pinata Baby CD (2005)
Pornography CD music
$14.79 A Northwest band known for their distinctive lyrics, striking female vocal harmonies and tight bass/guitar/drums/keys lineup, The Ditty Twisters pull out all the stops on their raucous sophomore release, Piñata Baby. Called "one of Po-Town's most original outfits" by Willamette Week, the band continues to break new ground as they gradually move away from the punkabilly swamp sound that characterized their first album. With a harder, more bass-inflected vibe, Piñata Baby delivers relentless rhythms and deceptively simple pop tune hooks.Produced by Joe Chiccarelli (Frank Zappa, Oingo Boingo, Tori Amos), Piñata Baby resulted from the crucible of creativity that was formed when the band experienced several life-changing events over the past year, including separation, marriage, death, and, of course, the addition of a new guitarist who likes to play in overdrive. The album's sweet melodies and bitter ...
