If Albert Lee fans have grown used to his commitment to a handful of good songs and extraordinary guitar work, then Road Runner will not disappoint. Lee and his band kick off with the title track, an easy-rolling rocker with a little vocal help from Buddy Miller. Lee follows with a solid set list that includes selections from John Hiatt, Leo Kottke, and Richard Thompson. These songs all receive tasteful renditions, but the real fun comes with uptempo fare like Billy Burnette and Tony Colton's "Didn't Start Livin'," and Delbert McClinton/Benmont Tench/Gary Nicholson's "Livin' It Down." It doesn't hurt that Lee has enlisted the talents of drummer Don Heffington, bassist Bob Glaub, and steel guitarist Buddy Emmons on Road Runner. Guest appearances by co-producer Steve Fishell on "Didn't Start Livin' and "Rock of Your Love," along with guitarist Mark S. Cohen on the latter, also add something extra to these arrangements. One of the coolest exchanges on the album is between Lee and Emmons' guitar and steel for the last minute and a half on "Working on Love." Guitar freaks, of course, will enjoy the album, but so will country music fans looking for tuneful songs that fall somewhere between the rough edges of alternative country and the glitter of Nashville. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr.

Road Runner album
$12.39 Though he's far from a household name, Albert Lee has quietly earned a reputation among musicians and discerning aficionados as a guitar hero of the first order. His twangy, country-influenced licks and dazzling dexterity place him in the Mark Knopfler/Eric Clapton/Richard Thompson camp of guitarists, and, as HEARTBREAK HILL makes abundantly clear, Lee is every inch their equal. He first became known for his work with British country-rockers Head, Hands & Feet, and subsequently worked with everyone from Emmylou Harris to the Everly Brothers. Over the years, Lee's sporadic solo records have delighted those with a penchant for lightning licks that never seem flashy or overdone. HEARTBREAK HILL is something of a tribute to Lee's former employer ...

| | Solomon Burke Nashville CD (2006) Digipak
Road Runner album
$9.99 Soul legend Solomon Burke harbored a desire to sing country tunes ever since his early days at Atlantic, but the powers-that-be wouldn't let their golden goose take the gamble. Four decades down the line, he finally got the opportunity, and he embraced it with open arms. Produced by twang titan Buddy Miller, NASHVILLE is the third album of Burke's "comeback" period that began with 2002's DON'T GIVE UP ON ME. NASHVILLE's two predecessors found Burke tackling often ill-fitting tunes by a bevy of rockers, but taking a country turn sounds completely natural for the 66-year-old soul man.
Crucial to this aesthetic success is the fact that ...

| | David Grisman Rounder Compact Disc CD (1993)
Road Runner CD music
$14.55 David Grisman is primarily known as a (perhaps even the) pioneer integrator of jazz into the prog-bluegrass/newgrass/whatever-you-call-it ("Dawg Music" to Grisman) branch of the bluegrass family tree. And with a number of other suspect jazz dabblers (fiddler Vassar Clements, guitarist Tony Rice, and banjo picker Tony Trischka, for instance) on hand, one might expect The Rounder Compact Disc (originally released as The Rounder Record) to be a Grappelli-sounding crossbreed experiment in line with Grisman's longstanding quintet. Yet, despite some string-slingin', fancy-licked solos, The Rounder Compact Disc is really a true blue bluegrass record. Why, this record has enough gospel harmonies, Bill Monroe songs, stories of money lost ...

| | Gadjits Today Is My Day CD (2002)
Road Runner album
$12.05 This album seems a far cry from the Gadjits' earlier third wave ska revival music. In a lot of ways, one could say that the Gadjits have just jumped from one trend to another, changing in their checkered black-and-white shoes and suspenders for the messy haircuts and old t-shirts of the rock resurgence being offered up from acts like the White Stripes and the Strokes. However, there are extreme differences between those acts and the Gadjits. While all the acts are comprised of young individuals, the Gadjits' sound is more along the line of a blues and roots sound, as opposed to the Detroit sound ...
