Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English Director Oliver Stone chalks up an ambitious entry on his biopic resume (past entries include films about Jim Morrison, Richard Nixon, and JFK among others) with this cinematic treatise on the life of the mighty Alexander the Great. Despite his young death at 32, Alexander packed some unimaginable conquests into his limited years by ruling over a huge chunk of the globe. Stone draws on a voice-over narration provided by Anthony Hopkins, whose character is named Ptolemy, to aurally depict some of the battles. Thus, Stone shifts the weight of the film to focus on the personality of Alexander (Colin Farrell), a man who is stricken by overwhelming personal insecurities that come in direct contrast to his bold achievements. Complex dealings with his mother (Angelina Jolie) and father (Val Kilmer) plague him, as does his turbulent relationship with his wife, Roxane (Rosario Dawson). His connection with his best friend, Hephaestion (Jared Leto), is ambiguous, with Stone touching on their vaunted homosexuality via some shared tender moments. As these personal battles are played out, Ptolemy fills the historic gaps in the narrative by charting the incredible conflicts that raged at Alexander's behest. Eventually, Stone lets loose with an epic on-screen battle, which sees Alexander's troops rumble across India in another country-conquering quest. But while his minions struggle, and Alexander demands success, it becomes clear that he is his own worst enemy. With the only real threat to Alexander coming from a tempestuous struggle with his own ego, Stone's summation of the great historical leader paints a picture of an embittered and solitary figure who was able to rule everyone apart from himself. Better Than The Critics Would Admit Okay. So Oliver Stone is disliked by the Hollywood establishment... we get it. Unfortunately, the critics missed the boat on this movie! This is THE defining "Alexander The Great" movie. It has its flaws (make-up for one) but the acting and direction are excellent. This film was panned both for having too much and for not having enough of a gay element. This is ridiculous! The story is historical and needs to be viewed as such. This movie doesn't have the posturing glitz and glamour of "Troy", nor does it have the overblown melodramatic aspects of "Gladiator". Instead, Oliver Stone attempts to capture the fascinating history of a man who changed the world. He succeeds! Submitted by Tom (Albuquerque, NM, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Alright At first I didn't like this film.I feel it portaryed and showed to much of Alexander's Love and gay affairs. It didn't really show many of his battles and put him up to be kinda weak.Bit long.Message was good if you search for it,but would be headaches understanding the storyline if your not familiar with Alexander historically. Farrell the lame actor I heard that this was one of the worst movies ever made, but I wanted to see it just to see how bad it really is.It is one of the worst movies I have seen in a while.Colin Farrell's portrayl of Alexander is soft and pathetic.Angelina Jolie's performance is plain and almost as bad as Farrell's.Please avoid this movie.I wish I did. $5.75 Kelsey Grammar plays a wayward Navy officer, Tom Dodge, who is notorious throughout the Navy for having responded to a close call involving a Russian submarine by getting drunk and tattooing "welcome aboard" on an unmentionable appendage. He gets assigned by Admiral Winslow (Rip Torn) to command his own submarine; unfortunately, this sub is a rusting 1958 diesel model that the Navy wants to engage in war games to find out if it could inflict any damage. The assumption is, this sub is comparable to those the Russians are selling to renegade Iraqi and Libyan commanders, who might use them on suicide missions against the US.
Once on board, we meet the cast of quirky characters who will man this clunker, including a hyper, mutinous Rob Schneider as second in command, Harland Williams as the copulating whale-impersonating radar operater Sonar, and Lauren Holly as the token female officer. The slapstick ensues as this group of underdogs attempt to pull off the impossible, the completion of which will determine Dodge's future career.

| | Easy Rider DVD (1969) Widescreen; Special Edition
Alexander DVD
$8.35 A landmark in film history, EASY RIDER blew the studio doors open for more young directors than any film before or since, helping to create the wide-open climate that would lead to the production of many outstanding films in the 1970s. As its director, Dennis Hopper is usually given the lion's share of credit for the film's success, but the revelations of time suggest that the contributions of the late Terry Southern and, to some degree, Jack Nicholson have endowed the film with much of its residual power.
Starring Peter Fonda as Wyatt (alias Captain America) and Hopper as Billy, it traces the hippie duo's adventures as they mount their seriously chopped hogs on a journey to find the real America en route to Mardi Gras. In Arizona, they visit a commune whose members are having a tough time, and in a small Texas town they're jailed for joining a parade. But they're quickly sprung by an ACLU lawyer, the quirky, hard-drinking George Hanson (Jack Nicholson), who accepts their offer to join them on the trip to New Orleans, eager to visit the best whorehouse in the South. EASY RIDER accurately reflects the tensions and hostilities of the period, Laszlo Kovacs's photography is superb, Nicholson is exceptional in his breakthrough role--and the startling, stunning ending is a shocker.

Alexander film
$9.69 Allan Dwan re-teams with Shirley Temple in this adaptation of the children's classic, which shares nothing with the well-known story except its title. After a nationwide search to find a Little Miss Universe, cereal mogul Cyrus Bartlett (Paul Harvey) hears the voice of an eight-year-old girl, Rebecca Winstead (Shirley Temple), and tells ad executive Tony Kent (Randolph Scott) that she's the girl he wants. But when the announcer mistakenly tells the girl that her audition is over, Rebecca's stepfather Henry Kipper (William Demarest), leaves the studio with her. Since they've just been evicted from their hotel, he leaves her with her Aunt Miranda (Helen Westley) at Sunnybrook Farm. Realizing the mistake, Tony goes into a tailspin. While in the country, Rebecca bumps into Tony, who has never seen her, and happens to own the adjoining property. Tony's announcer soon arrives, telling him that he's been unable to find the girl with the voice. But when Tony happens to be talking on the phone to Bartlett while Rebecca is singing in the background, they realize they've found their 'Little Miss Universe'. Temple is at her energetic best in this wholesomely entertaining film, which features a fine supporting cast, including Gloria Stuart of TITANIC fame.
