GRINDHOUSE is the cinematic equivalent of Bach and Beethoven adding their touch to a boy-band song. Master directors Quentin Tarantino (PULP FICTION) and Robert Rodriguez (SIN CITY) indulge their inner fanboys and team up for this homage to their favorite B-movies. Rodriguez's film, PLANET TERROR, is an old-fashioned zombie film that's infused with enough gore and giggles to please even Peter Jackson (BAD TASTE). Rose McGowan (CHARMED) plays Cherry, a go-go dancer whose night is interrupted by a vicious zombie attack that leaves her missing a leg. Her ex-boyfriend, Wray (Freddy Rodriguez, SIX FEET UNDER), takes charge, fashioning her a new leg from a machine gun and killing zombies along the way. In Tarantino's DEATH PROOF, Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) stalks beautiful women with his deadly vintage car. When he picks a trio of tough girls (Rosario Dawson, Tracie Thoms, and Zoe Bell), he learns they aren't such easy prey.
This double feature plays as a three-hour ode to the horror and exploitation films that once played in grimy grindhouses across the country. As with any Tarantino film, there are plenty of nods to pop culture, and this is no exception. Fellow horror directors Rob Zombie, Eli Roth, and Edgar Wright contribute fake trailers that are squeezed in between the two features. Genre fans will love seeing familiar faces such as Tom Savini, Danny Trejo, and Bill Moseley. Clearly Tarantino and Rodriguez were film lovers before they were filmmakers, and their passion for the medium is infectious. Those who can stomach GRINDHOUSE's high level of guns, guts, and gore are in for a treat. The hyper-violent films aren't for everyone, but three hours of film has rarely been this much fun. Grindhouse Reviews: "GRINDHOUSE, soaked in bloody nostalgia for the cheesy, disreputable pleasures of an older form of movie entertainment can also be seen as a passionate protest against the present state of the entertainment industry."-- A. O. Scott, New York Times "PLANET TERROR is an instant classic of deadpan perfection....[DEATH PROOF's] final showdown is sheer brutality, sheer bliss, and sheer primal statement on the new power balance of the sexes." -- Grade: A-- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly 3.5 stars out of 4 -- "GRINDHOUSE is a double dose of lowdown, dirty, blood-splattering fun....This babes-and-bullets tour de force gets you high on movies again."-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone 3 stars out of 4 -- "DEATH PROOF is a slasher/revenge fantasy with a female empowerment theme....GRINDHOUSE is a rowdy jolt of quasi-nostalgic escapism."-- Claudia Puig, USA Today 4 stars out of 5 -- "Infectious and irresistible....It's blessed with a rare, raw enthusiasm, made by two directors who really care for their day job."-- Jonathan Dean, Total Film 5 stars out of 5 -- "Tarantino makes his usual interesting music choices, giving the film a must-have soundtrack. Rodriguez does his own score with a John Carpenter-esque synthesizer. Every little detail adds up to make GRINDHOUSE the total package..."-- Fred Topel, Ultimate DVD

Grindhouse Movie Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Separate DVDs? Too bad they just didn't release the DVD as the theactrical version because it is much better as a double feature than as individual DVD'S (planet terror, death proof. Good news is the Theactrical version will be released very soon. Great Movie! It like you're actually watching an old grindhouse film. Submitted by vince (Murrieta, CA) Was This Review Helpful? Awesome in the theater Awesome movie in the theater! Both Tarintino and Rodriguez did a fantastic job with the films. The dvd release however was a major dissapointment. They should have left it alone and released it as it was originally released in the theater. Submitted by eggwhite (Seattle, WA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
CAN'T WAIT FOR DVD!! I disagree with the review below me,Rose Mcgowen was GREAT in the role of cherry!I heard that they are breaking this movie into 2 different DVD's. i think that is a mistake and they should keep it the way it was in the movies!!! AMAZING!!!!! Saw it opening day, laughed the whole way through at the many references to Tarantino & Rodriguez's other films. The theater was packed full, and when the end credits finally rolled the audience cheered. Submitted by popo.deepdelver (Vancouver, BC, CANADA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$22.19 Those prepared to hate the reboot of STAR TREK--whether they’re diehard fans or those in the anti-sci-fi camp--may be convinced to lower their shields after seeing this fun, action-filled film. Best known for creating mythology-driven series like LOST, J.J. Abrams has imbued his version with the elements that have made his shows such mind-bending entertainment while still keeping the soul of the saga intact. STAR TREK begins with an attack by an impossibly advanced Romulan ship captained by the tattooed, snarling Nero (Eric Bana). Among the survivors is the infant version of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), who grows up to wreak havoc on the Iowa countryside. When Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) meets an adult Kirk, he encourages him to join Starfleet, giving him the opportunity to meet Spock (Zachary Quinto), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), and the rest of the characters audiences have loved for decades.
Abrams has assembled a fine cast who seem to be aware of their predecessors but never resort to impressions. Both Quinto and Pine do a fine job with their portrayals of Kirk and Spock, and Karl Urban ...

$10.25 With their overtly comedic follow-up BURN AFTER READING, the Coen Brothers return--about a third of the way--from the dark, dank recesses of the human psyche they traversed in their Oscar-winning NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. For those unfamiliar with the landscape of modern movie psychoanalysis, this puts the fraternal filmmakers square in the cruel, misanthropic, and farcical realm of their 1990s-era body of work, somewhere between the tragicomic crime thriller of FARGO and the disconnected noir-homage anti-storytelling of THE BIG LEBOWSKI, with 2007's NO COUNTRY retroactively adding new nihilism-tinged dimensions of smart skepticism to the proceedings. In a more linear trajectory, BURN AFTER READING also stands as the third entry, after BLOOD SIMPLE and FARGO, in what could be an unofficial Tragedy of Human Idiocy trilogy, wherein characters make the most outlandishly moronic moves to devastating consequences simply by adhering to true human behavior. Indeed, Carter Burwell's emotionally weighty score, which washes over biting scenes of explosive, anesthetizing belly laughs, is very reminiscent of his FARGO work.
BURN is ostensibly structured and propelled by a spy-thriller ...

Grindhouse DVD
$15.15 How have the internal machinations of the film industry changed since Robert Altman expertly dissected them with the biting satire of THE PLAYER (1992)? Not a whole lot, according to this witty picture from Barry Levinson, which has been crafted from Hollywood producer Art Linson's memoir of the same name. WHAT JUST HAPPENED? follows film producer Ben (Robert De Niro) as he deals with precocious directors and stars, tends to the needs of various ex-wives, and makes multi-million-dollar deals from his car. The film mixes fantasy and reality, with Sean Penn and Bruce Willis playing themselves, while a fictional director (played by Michael Wincott) and producer (played by Catherine Keener) feud over the editing of a new feature. Ben finds himself stuck in the middle of their wrangling while also striving to persuade the cantankerous Willis to shave off a newly grown beard, or else face the cancellation of a huge-budget feature.
Levinson's film proficiently highlights the behind-the-scenes absurdities of the film industry. De Niro is perfectly cast as Ben, a sympathetic figure whose personal life has been obliterated by the demands of the job. John Turturro's scene-stealing appearances as a goofy agent are among the many highlights, and prove how remarkably adept he is at playing off-the-wall cameos (see also: THE BIG LEBOWSKI). The film ...

$8.85 Bollywood choreographer Ganesh Acharaya (RANG DE BASANTI, LAGE RAHO MUNNA BHAI), after omitting songs and dances from SWAMI, his directorial debut, takes an entirely different approach in his second film, MONEY HAI TOH HONEY HAI. Govinda (SALAAM-E-ISHQ, PARTNER), one of India's most beloved comic actors, plus five young co-stars get to strut their stuff in numerous musical fantasy sequences enlivened with hip-hop flash. There's plenty of fantasy plot to go with the dancing. Billionaire K.K. Jaiswal (Prem Chopra) decides to leave his textile company to six randomly chosen strangers, and viewers get detailed backstories for each would-be heir: a spoiled rich kid (Govinda); a gullible lottery winner (Manoj Bajpai); an excessively honest advertising copywriter (Aaftab Shivdasani); a small-time male model (Upen Patel) longing to be a commercial icon; a soap-opera star (Haniska Motwani) tired of being typecast as a perfect daughter-in-law; and a designer (Celina Jaitley) who wants to make affordable high fashion clothing. All expect the money from the textile tycoon to help them achieve their dreams. First, however, the six mismatched strangers learn that they must successfully run the company together.
