| | Dengue Fever Venus On Earth CD (2008)
India: The Voice Of The Sitar
$12.89 This Los Angeles-based band features a Cambodian vocalist (she sings in both English and Khmer) and takes as its primary inspiration the Cambodian rock of the 1960s. As there isn't exactly an overload of bands playing retro-psychedelic Cambodian rock in America in the 2000s, Dengue Fever stands out, and especially so with their beautifully realized second album, VENUS ON EARTH.
Dengue Fever's music is a heady cocktail of reverb-laden guitar, Farfisa organ, horns, and shuffling rhythms that channels jazz, lounge music, Southeast Asian pop, and spy movie music. "Woman in Her Shoes" sounds like a cross between Nico and the Zombies, and "Seeing Hands" recalls a mix of the Velvet Underground and a Bollywood tune, while "Monsoon of Perfume" is as effortlessly entrancing as Roy Orbison. In short, it's hard to classify VENUS ON EARTH, which is exactly what makes it refreshing.

| | Tinariwen Amassakoul CD (2004) (Import)
India: The Voice Of The Sitar
$14.89 Tinariwen strip rock down to its basic building blocks of rhythm, guitars, and voice. On their second CD there are no fancy studio tricks or multiple overdubs. They stick to what they've shown they do well -- keep the music raw and emotional. While there are similarities to the desert blues of Mali, these Tuareg nomads from the Western Sahara are as much as rock band as the Stones at their best, capable of conjuring up magic with a guitar riff or lick. Oftentimes, the music has the same bluesy, undulating, hypnotic rhythm of a camel crossing the sand, as on "Aldhechen Manin." But they can also crank the amps and unleash something to tingle the spine and feet, which they do on "Oualahila Ar Tesninam," as frantic and primal a piece of rock & roll as you're likely to find. There's even a touch of rap on "Arawan." But there's a complexity in their basic approach, the interlocking layers of electric guitars and the plaintive, defiant voices. ...

India: The Voice Of The Sitar
$13.89 French siblings Danielle and Didier Jean return as Uman with 1999's You Are Here. Though the album's pieces still feature Danielle's haunting vocals and Didier's lush, ambient textures, You Are Here finds Uman exploring the percussive side of their music. Elements of ambient, electronic, new age and world music combine in a seductive, sophisticated blend that is unique, atmospheric and distinctively Uman. ~ Heather Phares

India: The Voice Of The Sitar
$38.09 With 2001's multi-platinum-selling album BREAK THE CYCLE and the accompanying hit "It's Been Awhile," Springfield, Massachusetts-based hard rockers Staind went from nu-metal contenders to crossover mega-stars. Luckily, however, fame did little to change the band's trademark mix of solidly melodic metal, earnest lyrics, and unpretentious what-you-see-is-what-you-get image. Two albums later, CHAPTER V shows the band branching out a little, albeit in a typically understated, tasteful way. Thematically, many of the songs here concern the price of sudden success and the group's relationship with its uber-loyal fanbase. "Reply" is a heartfelt thanks for every adoring letter, while "Run Away" expresses uncertainty about the fickleness of fortune. Musically, the group sticks to what it does best; a mix of grungy metal and heartfelt ballads, but with ...
