Uncut (6/03, p.117) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...The highlights from Simon 'Freeform' Pyke's experiments in haunting minimalist electronica since 1987..." The Wire (4/03, p.54) - "...Pyke builds up tracks from acoustic fragments sampled from his own improvisations. Yet he privileges neither acoustic or synthetic sound; he's just as likely to record toy instruments and magnify the results..." Condensed (Finest Filets 1997-2002) album
$9.59 The Four Horsemen were quite literally a shattered band come 1996. Five years on from their simplistic but infectious retro-rock debut, they'd been dropped by Def American, been abandoned by their main songwriter guiding force in founding guitarist Haggis, and, most heartbreaking of all, lost drummer Ken "Dimwit" Montgomery to a drug overdose. As the band's last remaining original members, it came down to guitarist Dave Lizmi and troubled singer Frank C. Starr (more on him later) to assemble a new lineup and attempt to shoulder the load themselves on the snidely named Gettin' Pretty Good at Barely Gettin' By. And they did an OK job. The album still featured much of the Four Horsemen's ...

Condensed (Finest Filets 1997-2002) CD music
$6.55 While only serious film buffs are likely to recall Hugh Hudson's role as the director of the Oscar-winning CHARIOTS OF FIRE, the Greek composer Vangelis became, and remained, a household name with his soundtrack for the 1981 film. At the time, the theme song was parodied as being excessively saccharin.
Indeed, with titles such as "Five Rings" and "100 Metres," the album wears its Olympian heart on its sleeve. Nonetheless, CHARIOTS OF FIRE is often a brooding work, and if the prevailing memory of this album is one of slow-motion runners and heady triumph, Vangelis's synthesizer work often conveys a sense of isolation and lost glory.
Vangelis is one of the most famed composers of film music, and with 1492 he adds another superior soundtrack ...

| | Color Wall View From Above CD (2004)
Condensed (Finest Filets 1997-2002) music CDs
$10.09 If music was a color, what color would it be? It's an excellent question, especially in the context of Color Wall's dense guitars reinforced by compelling rhythms and lyrics that paint sharply focused pictures of where we've been and where we could be going. The Los Angeles-based band...Jeff Burgee (vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, percussion), Andrew Loeser (drums), Justin Billmeier (guitar) and Andrew Katos (bass) -- are indie rock heroes with a commercial radio advantage. Color Wall established their place on both sides of the independent vs. mainstream divide with the five-song EP, Blue, which made a Top 10 splash on college and specialty radio playlists from coast to coast in 2002, followed by the FMQB Top Twenty success of their 2003 release, Red, which peaked at No. 12 in the country. However, Color Wall's steady build began on the foundation laid out in 1997 when the Ralph Lauren Polo Jeans Division tagged them Best Unsigned Band in America, and Modern Rock radio gave the cd single track, Flower, a dizzying 4000 spins. Color Wall's fifth release and first full-length CD, The View From Above, produced by Burgee, is poised to take them to even greater heights when it hits store shelves in early 2005. The first emphasis track, 'The Weakest' is already at a strong advantage, muscling into mainstream Modern Rock radio specialty shows and crossing over to regular playlists. In the mean time, the band is making The View From Above available in advance at www.colorwall.com. "Because we've already been getting good airplay, I want to make the CD available to people who go through the effort of searching it down, so they don't have to wait for it for three months," Burgee says. A smart executive decision as the head of the band's own label, Lazy Suzan Records (named for Color Wall's previous incarnation when they towered over the Maryland music scene). Again bridging the indie-mainstream gap, Color Wall's not-so-lazy Lazy Suzan has been offered a major distribution deal from ADA via Warner Bros. Records. "We're a really optimistic band, and I named The View From Above for checking out life and the world from a higher state of mind," Burgee reveals. It's always a risky proposition to record a cover of a hit song, but Color Wall, noted for their bold musical ingenuity, took a creative leap ...
