Emerging from the mid-1960s British blues boom, the Groundhogs cut their professional teeth as John Lee Hooker's British touring band. Their 1968 debut album shows a group simultaneously in search of authenticity and an original sound, with a heavy emphasis on electric reworkings of traditional material like "Walking Blues" and "Still a Fool."
This is the first album from blues psycho rockers The Groundhogs featuring guitarist T.S. McPhee. The CD has been digitally remastered and conatins new notes from John Tobler. BGO Records. 2006. Scratching The Surface Music Groundhogs Scratching The Surface Songs | 1. | Rocking Chair | |

Scratching The Surface music CDs
$14.45 Despite his statement in the liner notes that "In an era where it is best to play it safe, I chose to take a risk...," there isn't much surprising or risky about young guitarist Joe Bonamassa's fifth studio album. Most of his previous releases have mixed blues covers with his own originals, all played with a rocker's attitude, volume and less-than-subtle approach. This one follows suit and even though he goes on to say that he "wanted to make a blues album, not a rock album that has blues on it," as in the past; it's impossible to claim that he has succeeded with You & Me. That doesn't make this a bad or disappointing disc; quite the contrary, it's a solid blues-rock release and arguably his best work to date. But as early as the second track, an original rocker titled "Bridge to Better Days," Bonamassa takes off on an early Free/Savoy Brown-styled stomper. Things settle down and get ...

Scratching The Surface album
$6.79 You might mistake this for a live record, but this is actually a 1973 studio release by the Texas blues guitar master. Winter's first release after a brief retirement/drying-out period, STILL ALIVE AND WELL, from the title on down, has the feeling of a major comeback, although Winter really hadn't been gone for very long. Looking hale and hearty on the cover--or as hale and hearty as a rail-thin albino can look, anyway--Winter sounds equally fit on the songs themselves. Produced by his longtime collaborator Rick Derringer, who also leads the tight and flashy band with his rhythm and second lead playing, the album is possibly the most pop-oriented release of Winter's tenure at Columbia. The band, which features Todd Rundgren on ...

Tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake, who was 24 at the time, is in excellent form on this creative post-bop set. | | Paula Kelley Trouble With Sucess Or How You Fit Into The World CD (2003) (Import) Japan
Scratching The Surface music CDs
$40.75 Paula Kelley, vocalist of the Drop Nineteens, presents her album THE TROUBLE WITH SUCCESS OR HOW YOU FIT INTO THE WORLD.
The Trouble With Success or How You Fit into the World finds ex-Drop Nineteens/Boy Wonder vocal darling Paula Kelley moving beyond the cute factors of her Nothing/Everything debut for a divine pop effort. She and musician Eric Matthews craft a sophisticated set that's both classic in Baroque pop and indie pop to showcase Kelley's lovely imagination. It's a daring move. Going for Burt Bacharach-like stylings without it all sounding contrived is a task; however, Kelley succeeds. Joining her is a backing section of nearly 40 musicians known as the PK Orchestra. Each song is bright in instrumental color and spirit and Kelley's angelic, girlish vocals leave you swooning. Basically, The Trouble With Success... can be anyone's autobiographical tale of fighting fit and Kelley's storybook of "My Finest Hour" experiences the many waves of personal introspection. "How Many Times" is a wonderful ballad dressed ...
