One of the greatest masters of the bass in jazz history, Charles Mingus articulated the emotional currents of his time in a unique way. The albums this giant of music recorded for Atlantic between 1956 and 1961 are rightly considered his best. This collection includes such classics as 'Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting', 'Haitian Fight Song' and 'Moanin'' (as featured on the Tetley Beer TV ad). Rhino. 2006. Introducing Charles Mingus songs
$9.59 How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. With its unlikely combination of Alpert's cool Chet Baker-like trumpet and the blocky cadences of a marching band, the Tijuana Brass produced a lively, colorful mix that managed to appeal to hips and squares alike.
WHIPPED CREAM & OTHER DELIGHTS was Herb Albert's most successful album, ...

| | Stan Kenton Merry Christmas! CD (2003)
Introducing Charles Mingus CD music
$9.39 When bandleader Stan Kenton was approached to record an album of holiday music in 1961 he agreed, on one condition -- no songs about singing snowmen or flying reindeer. The resulting album, A Merry Christmas, is a polyphonic masterpiece that is at once progressive and traditional. Included are such well-known classics as "O Tannenbaum" and "The Twelve Days of Christmas" as well as lesser known gems like "The Holly and the Ivy" and "Once in Royal David's City." Featuring Kenton's idiosyncratic ...

| | Guru Jazzmatazz II: The New Reality CD (1995)
Introducing Charles Mingus album
$9.39 The follow-up to the heavily acclaimed Jazzmatazz, Vol. 1. This album might not have quite as much jazz-rap power as the first volume did, but it's still quite good. Some of the big guns of jazz found their way into the album, including Branford Marsalis (who, of course, had already experimented with urban beats a bit with his Buckshot Lefonque project), Freddie Hubbard, Ramsey Lewis, and Kenny Garrett. Underground rapper Kool Keith (at this point still a member of the Ultramagnetics) also makes an appearance. Dancehall reggae princess Patra is included on a track, as are Chaka Khan and Me'Shell N'Degeocello; Jamiroquai helps out in another. In some ways, the personnel on this album may be slightly superior to the first outing, but the music also seems a tiny bit blander. Still, what makes the Jazzmatazz albums special ...
| | Faith Hill Cry CD (2002) Enhanced CD
Introducing Charles Mingus CD music
$9.69 CRY was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Country Album. "Cry" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.
Listening to the opening track "Free" on Faith Hill's CRY, one might be momentarily thrown; is this the Nashville country-pop siren we've come to know, or has the new Christina Aguilera album been mistakenly packaged in this jewel case? Come to think of it, the album cover might prompt the same question. While the electronic, pumping dance-pop rhythms of "Free" are far from what we think of as the Nashville sound, even in the 21st century, expectations are put back on track with the next track. The title song is closer to the Garth Brooks-meets-Pat Benatar power ballad sound commonly associated with Hill. The rest of the album walks a tightrope between the two styles, darting back and forth on either side. While the likes of "Stronger" and "You're Still Here" are ballads close to Hill's country-pop ...
| | Nat Adderley Work Song CD (1960) SACD Hybrid
Introducing Charles Mingus music CDs
$16.05 Recorded in New York, New York on January 25 & 27, 1960. Originally released on Riverside (1167). Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews.
Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1989, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
This CD reissue brings back a near-classic by cornetist Nat Adderley. Utilizing a cornet-cello-guitar front line (with Sam Jones and Wes Montgomery) along with a top-notch rhythm section (pianist Bobby Timmons, Percy Heath, or Keter Betts on bass and drummer Louis Hayes), Adderley performs a fine early version of his greatest hit ("Work Song") and ...
