Although Roger Rodier is Canadian, this rare early-'70s singer/songwriter album sounds almost as if it could have been made in Britain, such is its similarity to folk-rock recordings of the time by the likes of Al Stewart. In fact Rodier faintly resembles Stewart vocally, and has an inclination toward gentle, slightly sad songs mixing acoustic guitar, orchestration, and female backup vocals (a combination used by Nick Drake on Bryter Layter). But his voice, as a singer or composer, isn't nearly as distinctive as that of, say, Stewart or Drake. Upon Velveatur is a passable effort in this tributary, Rodier's mildly lisping singing evoking both delicate sensitivity and a certain sense of detached observation. He and his songs are a little troubled, but not distraught, with the exception of "While My Castle's Burning," whose angrily strummed guitars, dramatic strings, and vitriolic vocals project muted rage, albeit of a fairly inarticulate kind. Its mixture of placidity and brooding reflection might casually recall Drake, but Rodier wasn't working on as high a level. [The 2006 CD reissue on Sunbeam adds five bonus tracks, four taken from 1969 singles, the other from the 1972 non-LP B-side "Easy Song." Generally speaking, these are less ornate than the material on Upon Velveatur, though they have a similar light folk-rock base; "Have You?" sounds a little like George Harrison's folkiest early solo material, and the two songs from the first 45, "L'Herbe"/"Tu Viendras," are sung in French.] ~ Richie Unterberger
Often compared to the work of Nick D ra ke , Upon Ve l veatur is a dense and mysterious French - Canadian folk-psych suite, featuring beautiful m e l o d i e s , lush orc h e s t ration and s c o rching electric guitar. Barely circulated on its original release in 1972 , it has gathered a major cult following and is now making its first appearance on CD, complete with five bonus tracks , ra re photographs and sleevenotes by the enigmatic M. Rodier himself.

Once you make it past the sappy opening "Best of Friends" that overloads syrupy Disney-styled strings, after-school-special lyrics, and a guest duet from Carly Simon, all of which make it sound like a Sesame Street outtake, Livingston Taylor's first studio album of new material in nine years finds its footing. The song does set the tone of this disc, though, finding the younger Taylor in a particularly upbeat, love-the-world mood. The following tune, "There I'll Be," unites Taylor siblings James and Kate for the first time on one of Livingston's best tunes. A lovely mid-tempo ballad with a lilting melody and a snappy electric guitar fill from Vince Gill, it is a capsule of everything Livingston does well when the parts fit. There is still no mistaking the similarity to older brother James, at least vocally, but these songs shade more to classic pop, gospel, and jazz. “Songs Without Metaphors” summarizes much of what I have learned from living, participating in social justice movements and teaching history at the university level for many years. Many of the songs were written in Berlin, Germany in 2003-4, and the rest in 2005 in Chicago. The main themes are critiques of capitalism, gender essentialism and more broadly authoritarianism regardless of the system. Another major theme is the importance of historical as opposed to teleological thinking, in support of egalitarian visions grounded in humility. Teleological thinking says, “this is the purpose of (whatever: nature, humanity, the universe); history may seem directionless but really X (God, nature, human nature, again whatever, but these are the usual suspects) determines a final outcome. Nobody actually knows any of this, and there is no (zero) evidence for any of it. It is authoritarian and absurd at its core. Its also, unfortunately, very popular. Teleological thinking is rooted in religion but has many secular forms as well. At its simplest it is a narrative that claims that the beginning determines, or ought to determine (if not disrupted by some “misguided” human action), the direction and/or final outcome of history, time, etc. Songs:1.
