Children Of The New Brigade album
$22.09 Michael J. Sheehy is a clever fellow. The first song on the morose crooner's sophomore solo release also doubles as the title of his debut full-length. The sparse and haunting segue tune, "Sweet Blue Gene," is the perfect bridge between the companion pieces. Basically, Ill Gotten Gains is the expected sequel -- another solid batch of lyric-oriented vignettes concerning sin, love, detachment, and pain. As far as instrumentation, there are more of the same intricate string arrangements, shimmering keys, and slick programming tricks. One interesting expansion, however, is that Ill Gotten Gains offers a bit more in the soul department as evidenced by the earthy female backing vocals that sporadically drift through and the occasional sax break provided by Spiritualized's horn man, Ray Dickaty. Regardless of these minor innovations and overall pristine presentation of sound, Ill Gotten Gains ultimately succeeds ...

| | St Thomas Hey Harmony CD (2004) (Import) Norway
Children Of The New Brigade music CDs
$15.09 Hey Harmony marks Thomas Hansen's (aka St. Thomas) follow-up to his stateside debut, I'm Coming Home, and a nice, casual step forward for the Norwegian songwriter. From the cyclical opening shuffle, it's clear that Hansen was in a considerably more sincere mood than the lovable goofiness that made up much of I'm Coming Home, as he confesses ...

| | Bob Dylan Christmas In The Heart CD (2009)
Children Of The New Brigade album
$12.85 After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck "Must Be Santa," which barrelhouses like a barroom, Dylan doesn't really reinterpret these songs as much as simply play them with his crackerjack road band, dropping in a little flair -- restoring "we'll have to muddle through somehow" to "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," singing the opening of "O Come All Ye Faithful" in its original Latin -- but never pushing tunes ...
| | Trans-Siberian Orchestra Night Castle CDs (2009)
Children Of The New Brigade CD music
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version of "Nutrocker" ever ...

| | Jazz Scene: San Francisco CD (2001)
Children Of The New Brigade album
$13.95 This CD consists of the music formerly included on the albums Modern Music From San Francisco and Charlie Mariano Sextet. The former LP features three overlapping groups of musicians who were mostly based in San Francisco in the mid-'50s, with pianist Sonny Clark being a ringer. The Vince Guaraldi Quartet, the Ron Crotty Trio, and Jerry Dodgion's Quartet all show that the "modern" music played in San Francisco at the time was not much different than its better-known L.A. counterpart. The music swings, has smooth and light timekeeping from the rhythm section, and ...
