5 stars Heidi Mortenson : Wired Stuff (Wired Records).
We put the cd on. Breathing. Organic, orgasmic in a loop, between Kraftverk doing the Tour de France trick and PJ Harvey, Dry period. Then the song begins, somewhere between trip-hop and pop. Soft start, with sounds cut and sharp as diamonds. Forward, backward, some drops of Ruby (the Salt Peter album.... I just remembered it dates back to 1995….where the f*ck is she now?!?!). From the very first tracks, it's obvious that Wired Stuff is a rich, dense album of layers, radical changes, and pop experiment without any set rules. It goes down unexpected strange paths and radically changes direction. "Working On It" starts as a Neubauten meets Future Lisa track to take some Scream Club ( I wrote this before I read they rocked together at Ladyfest Berlin... somehow I was not surprised) style traces, falls into a break which makes you check whether it's still the same song, and comes back again. Electronic sounds, sudden soft melodies, sweat and sex. It's HOT! She is Hanin Elias and Tara Delong talking about love, hurting, power, sex, and more. Irresistibly attractive. I thought about the freedom of Kevin Blechdom when I first heard the album (they are friends.. again, not really surprised I am). What is amazing about this record is that it is both really simple and really complex, it's difficult to explain, you have to feel it, really. it works as hell... and this adaptation of Rid Of Me she does.... goose bumps!

From The Heart
Judge Fletcher From The Heart CD  (2006)

Wired Stuff
CD $13.69
Judge Fletcher’s vocal talents are a product of his up bringing as well as his undying determination to excel. His deep resonant bass tones are enjoyed by many and, as he ages, it only gets better. He began singing early in life. He grew up in an a capella church and was blessed with a large extended family who were members of the same denomination. At family get-togethers, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter, the family would set aside part of every evening to sing their favorite hymns, and the vocal harmonies were as tight as any professional choir. While in high school, Fletcher learned what it meant to perform music, not just sing it. He sang in the choir and acted in the school musicals all 4 years, He also participated in local and state wide vocal competitions. In his sophomore year, Judge claimed 2nd chair for basses in the state of Texas. His best friend from church beat him out by a tenth of a point for 1st chair. On Fletcher's 16th birthday a friend of his parents from church gave Judge the guitar that he had learned to play on. “My poor parents didn’t sleep for months,” Fletcher says, “until I learned how to play a little. After that, they really didn’t sleep because I would play along with the radio into the wee hours of the morning.” On his 18th birthday, he traded in that guitar for the 12-string Yamaha that he still plays today. At 22, with his guitar in hand and a few songs he had written, Judge hopped a bus to a little town outside of Houston, Texas where his second cousin had just opened a recording studio. He recorded the album “From the Heart” and released 500 copies on cassette tape and printed 500 singles on 45s. Recently, the tape went back into the studio and it was transferred from tape to CD.Fletcher joined the Marine Corps in 1990 and before boot camp was over, was recognized as a singer and entertainer. After military school, he was assigned to a unit at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina and soon after that, was singing for the USO in town and entertaining people from all over the area. While deployed overseas in Japan and the Mediterranean Sea, he performed for the troops at every port and, also sang for some dignitaries, including the Commanding General of the Army in Spain. On the way home from his last Mediterranean deployment, Fletcher won the talent competition on the ship ...

Toxic Charm
Ace Noface Toxic Charm CD  (2009)

Wired Stuff
CD $13.69
Words like “inspiring” get used so casually that their meaning loses power. But in the case of Ace Noface, and his new album, Toxic Charm, one immediately becomes present to the true meaning of words like inspiration and courage. The musician, living with a terminal illness, is facing his fate with courage and conviction by creating rich and resonant piano-based rock that is in turn hypnotic, jarring and spellbinding. Ace’s life and music is the ultimate example of living what is possible in the face of any circumstance. Listening to Toxic Charm, you can hear the plaintive vocals, the resonance of the piano and the rolling presence of the rhythm section – it’s a huge sound for such few instruments, but it makes sense, given that Ace makes the most of what he’s got. At one time the bassist for an indie-rock band, in 2005, Ace was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, an incurable and degenerative neurological disorder. The diagnosis, obviously, was devastating. Ace remembers, “I really shut down mentally and emotionally for six months. I spent most of my days playing on the Internet and listening to music – I couldn’t deal.”But a musician friend took a stand for Ace, and informed him what might be possible. “He told me that even though I couldn’t play an instrument anymore, I had to continue making music,” Ace recalls. “He said that he knew that was what I had to do to make some sense of the diagnosis and give meaning to the rest of my life, as opposed to just suffering. So I developed a sense of purpose for my life – probably more than any other time.”To begin, Ace had to learn a whole new way of making music; using one finger, some computer software and email. It was a daunting task, but Ace quickly found a benefit. He explains, “When I’m writing music or lyrics I completely get lost in it – I forget that I have any kind of disability.” It’s a fascinating process that Ace takes us through: “I’ll hear a melody or a chord progression in my head and then I’ll get in front of music notation software and I’ll use an onscreen keyboard to enter the notes. I’ll write either melody or a piano part. Then I’ll go back to it in a few days and come up with other parts, as well as the melody and piano line. Then I put the music away for a couple of weeks, and I’ll free associate lyrics – a lot of my lyrics come from random writings. Then I sit in front of a text editor and rhyming dictionary and the song will often just write itself straight out of my subconscious.”It’s a process that has resulted in the mesmerizing Toxic Charm, an album of piano-based rock reminiscent of bands like Steely Dan, the Fray, and Five For Fighting – a sound that hearkens to classic pop, but is fixed firmly in the here and now. There isn’t a wasted note on the album – each sound is perfectly placed and sounds completely natural and right. Ace’s vocals are soulful and heartfelt, and on songs like “Regret,” he faces his reality squarely, and the courage with which he does touches ...
