Cabaret Voltaire Best Of '78/'82 CD  (2002)

Question For The Somnambulist album
CD $10.65  Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Electronic music has come a long way since Cabaret Voltaire began mixing it up with machines in order to evade boredom. As primitive as Watson, Kirk, and Mallinder's early material sounds decades after conception, in the wake of countless movements within the form, nothing can take away from the fact that no one will ever approach the spectral wonder inherent in the group's early work. Just over a third of The Original Sound of Sheffield: '78/'82 -- the sister release to 2001's similarly titled anthology that covers 1983-1987 -- overlaps with The Living Legends compilation, but this disc now acts as the first place to go for early Cabaret Voltaire. The Living Legends covered roughly the same period, collecting tracks from singles, EPs, and compilations. This one opens up the scope to consider the landmark (and vastly different) ...

Question For The Somnambulist CD music
CD $11.45  4.7 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Ron and Russell Mael, aka Sparks, have been making some of the most confounding and incredibly enjoyable music of the past 30 years. HELLO YOUNG LOVERS (2006) stays true to Sparks' manic tradition and holds up against the band's classic 1970s albums. For newcomers, the easiest musical reference point for Sparks is Queen: both bands share a fondness for the operatic potential of rock and pop. Sparks' artistry, however, ...

Commonality
Jeff Coffin Commonality CD  (1999)

Question For The Somnambulist music CDs
CD $14.25  Audio Samples
If you are searching for the next upcoming original saxophonist in modern jazz, Coffin may be your man. He plays alto and tenor in a manner very reminiscent of a young Sonny Rollins; savvy, brawny, unabashed, and fearless. Four of the nine cuts are with sax-bass-drums, again evoking favorable comparison to the legendary hard bop-edged Rollins-Wilbur Ware-Elvin Jones triad. Trumpeter Rod McGaha is on the other five, and he adds a lot -- his saucy Don Cherry-like smeared solos and pungent harmonic lines run in tandem with Coffin, making a formidable team and an arresting sound. The trio takes on some stiff challenges: a moderate New Orleans shuffle ("First Comes Last"), a fanfare intro to head noddin' bluesy swing to free boppin' title track, and a sweet and sour blues ("Espoo You"). The finale is ...
Unit Of Measure
Tony Rice Unit Of Measure CD  (2000)

Question For The Somnambulist songs
CD $14.65  5 stars Audio Samples
The Tony Rice Unit's last album of new material, Backwaters, was released in 1982. In fact, most of the lineup of the band, with fiddle player Rickie Simpkins, guitarist Wyatt Rice, mandolinist Jimmy Gaudreau, and bassist Ronnie Simpkins, formed in the mid-'80s, a few years after Backwaters was released. They had never recorded together. Unit of Measure is perhaps more traditional than previous Tony Rice Unit albums, with Bill Monroe's "Gold Rush" played as straight bluegrass. The eight-minute live version of "Sally Goodin" is a flatpicking, fiddle sawing bluegrass jam, and "Beaumont Rag" continues in this vein. Standouts on Unit of Measure include the now jazzgrass standard "Swing ...

Hideout
Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers Hideout CD  (2004)

Question For The Somnambulist music CDs
CD $12.35  4 stars Audio Samples
Pucho & His Latin Soul Brothers: Eddie Pazant (alto saxophone); Al Pazant, Richard Lee Wendel, Gerald Brazel (trumpet); John "Madhatter" Spruill (piano, organ); Danny Mixon (piano); William Bivens (vibraphone); Santos Rivera (bongos, percussion); Henry Brown (timbales); Rick Faulkner, Lewis Kahn, Johnny Griggs. In 2004, a 65-year-old Pucho was quoted as saying, "A piano player and a bass player in my band has to play three types of music: he has to play jazz, he has to play funk and he has to play Latin." The veteran percussionist/bandleader no doubt made similar statements 40 years earlier; over the years, Pucho & His Latin Soul Brothers have never had a problem combining soul-jazz and Afro-Cuban jazz. Pucho has bridged the gap between Machito, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria and Cal Tjader on one hand, and Gene Harris, Stanley Turrentine and Jack McDuff on the other (minus an organ), and that vision continues to serve him pleasingly well on Hideout. The New Yorker named this album, which Todd Barkan produced in 2003 and 2004, after a notoriously rough club that was located in West Harlem not far from Columbia University back in the '60s. The Hideout probably closed around 1970, and in 2004, there was a bodega where the club once stood. Despite The Hideout's reputation for violence, Pucho appreciated the fact that the owner "took good care of the musicians" -- and this album is a tribute to his early years in the music business. Pucho fondly recalls that time on memorable, inspired performances of songs ranging ...
