| | Nina Simone Mastercuts Presents CD Nina Simone Discography of CDs
Despite the lack of credibility of the label that released Mastercuts Presents (the British Mastercuts generally sticks to dance music compilations, though it may be hard for American listeners to avoid the discount haircut connotations), the album is actually a pretty good Nina Simone sampler. Perhaps that's because the tracks are the same ones (though the order is switched around) as those from her seminal 1957 debut album, Little Girl Blue. The versions are slightly different, however, "Love Me or Leave Me," for example, not having quite the same punch in the piano or in Simone's voice, though nice nonetheless. The artist sounds superb throughout, but that being said, it still makes much more sense to just stick to the original, as Mastercuts Presents doesn't add enough of anything notable to warrant the purchase. ~ Marisa Brown

$10.99 Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic ...

| | Evan Parker House Full Of Floors CD (2009)
Mastercuts Presents album
$12.78 On an inside panel of the booklet for House Full of Floors, Evan Parker's second release for John Zorn's Tzadik imprint (and his third album of 2009), he writes simply of the session as if framing a poem: "The plan was to / record the trio. / Aleks Kolkowski / came to make some / wax cylinder recordings / and he stayed / to play some / quartet pieces." The truth of the matter is, this is hardly disingenuous. The recording actually sounds exactly like its description. Parker, guitarist John Russell, and bassist John Edwards are featured on the majority of this beautiful set in a series of trios and duets that are knotty, subtle, and deeply intuitive improvisational pieces. Kolkowski joins them on a Stroh viola, the saw, and wax cylinder recorder on two tracks as well. Parker's signature as an improviser is immediate. Whether it's a series of single-note lines and phrases or tonal clusters rushing out of his tenor or soprano, the control is total. ...

| | Bob Wilber Everywhere You Go There's Jazz CD (1999)
Mastercuts Presents songs
$9.55 Wilber has been heard with smaller ensembles, so it's good to find him with a larger, more interactive group -- a diversely bred bunch of Dixieland-to-swing mavens. Swedes Bent Persson (trumpet/cornet) and Lars Erstrand (vibes), Finnish multi-woodwindist Antti Sarpila, native Brit/Canadian resident vibist Peter Appleyard, straight Brits Dave Cliff (guitar) and Dave Green (bass) join Americans Wilber, trombonist Dan Barrett, pianist Dick Hyman and drummer Ed Metz, Jr. for this 13-track program of classic, early period jazz. Things start off with a tribute to Benny Goodman with his lesser known number "Scarecrow," a good swinger with Wilber's clarinet and alto firing up the band, making way for Green's swing-to-bop guitar accompanied by a background horn chart. Persson's clear Louis Armstrong influence ...

Yes, they'll forever be known as that group whose members dressed in yellow-and-black costumes and had a singer who on his best day could warble ...
| | Buckeye Knoll CD (2007)
Mastercuts Presents songs
$6.69 Buckeye Knoll is the imagination of Doug Streblow brought to life with the help of his two friends Josh Roman and Cian Riordan. Feeling like a stranger in a music scene that embellishes on its artist’s problems, however large or dire, Doug chooses to elaborate on the lighter side of things. Because at the simplest level, Buckeye Knoll is ode to all things beautiful; a celebration of what makes people happy, and it began on a ranch not too far off from the San Francisco Bay. You see, there is rather peculiar hill overlooking the entire Napa Valley on which a lone buckeye tree stands – this is where the trio appropriates its name. This is the knoll that served as a backdrop to Doug’s upbringing. A happy kid turned bewildered college student, he knew not what to do with his life. Being the front man for his former band Shafter only wet his lips with the taste of making music. The band was together for five years, and in that time they had released several records and played shows all over the west coast. When the curtains closed on Shafter, Doug packed his backpack and guitar and spent a few months in the wilderness learning about his surroundings, its inhabitants, and in turn began deciphering himself. This was the inspiration for the songs that now define Buckeye Knoll. Josh, having some band experience under his own belt, began drumming with Doug and arranging the songs in 2005 only to be joined by Cian Riordan on the bass guitar. With Doug – a star struck romantic humming James Taylor under his breath, Josh – a lead-armed drummer with a wicked sense for all things business, and Cian – who guy who just liked to make things work, an exciting trifecta was now in place to take a stab at creating the ...
