| | Cannonball Adderley Great Sessions CD Cannonball Adderley Discography of CDs
Personnel: Cannonball Adderley; Pedro Paulo, Octavio Bailey, Dom Um Romao, Durval Ferreira, Hank Jones , Joe Zawinul, Miles Davis, Nat Adderley, Paulo Moura, Roy McCurdy, Sam Jones, Art Blakey, Sergio Mendes, Victor Gaskin. The Cannonball Adderley installment in the BLUE NOTE'S GREAT SESSIONS series collects three of the altoist's solo albums in one box set. 1962's CANNONBALL'S BOSSA NOVA finds Adderley soloing over bossa nova grooves with help from Brazil's Bossa Rio Sextet (which includes Sergio Mendes on piano). While enjoyable, the disc is not an essential Adderley purchase. The other two discs included in the set, however, are among the artist's finest accomplishments, especially 1958's SOMETHING ELSE, which features Miles Davis in what may be his most dazzling appearance as a sideman. In general, the album is a post-bop masterpiece. Adderley's 1966 "live" album, MERCY MERCY MERCY, one of his most popular (recorded by famed producer David Axelrod and featuring an in-the-studio audience), is a potent dose of groove-centered soul-jazz and bop mastery. The latter two albums alone are worth the price of the set. Blue Note's Great Sessions repackaged and re-released three popular Cannonball Adderley discs -- 1958's Somethin' Else (RVG Edition), Cannonball's Bossa Nova from 1962, and Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! Live at "The Club" (1966) -- as a mid-line, slip-cased box set. It's not a bad way to acquire the albums if you don't already own them, but there are no bonus tracks or new packaging, which means it's of marginal interest to hardcore collectors. ~ Al Campbell Cannonball Adderley Great Sessions Songs Great Sessions Review

| | Stan Getz Final Concert Recording CDs (2001)
Great Sessions
$11.79 Personnel: Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Kenny Barron (piano); Eddie Del Barrio, Frank Zottoli (synthesizer); Alex Blake (bass); Terri Lyne Carrington (drums). Recorded live at the Munich Philharmonic Hall, Munich, Germany in July 1990. Includes liner notes in Zan Stewart. Personnel: Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Kenny Barron (piano); Eduardo del Barrio, Frank Zottolik (synthesizer); Terri Lyne Carrington (drums). Recording information: Munich Philharmonic Hall (1990). The title of this two-CD set is not accurate since tenor saxophonist Stan Getz recorded People Time (a Verve set) six months after this one. However the release of this music is quite welcome, for Getz is heard near the end of his life still in prime form. He is joined by pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Alex Blake, and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington throughout the Munich concert. Five songs (four co-written by Getz, Eddie Del Barrio, and Herb Alpert) have Del Barrio and Frank Zotoli added on synthesizers; these slightly commercial numbers had recently been recorded for Getz's A&M record, Apasionado. The tenor sounds typically passionate on those weaker tracks, but the real reasons to acquire this two-fer are the nine quartet numbers. Getz is quite exuberant on such tunes as "On a Slow Boat to China," Mal Waldron's "Soul Eyes," "El Cajon," Kenny Barron's "Voyage," and "What Is This Thing Called Love." He takes one brilliant improvisation after another, making this set one to search for. ~ Scott Yanow The title of this two-CD set is partially correct, as it is likely the final complete concert featuring Stan Getz to be recorded and issued, though the live compilation of concert excerpts with pianist Kenny Barron (People Time) was recorded the following year. This performance at the Munich Philharmonic Hall is a bit unusual, in that the tenor saxophonist augmented his quartet with two synthesizer players, Eddy Del Barrio and Frank Zottolik, for some bland arrangements from his disappointing Apasionado CD made for Herb Alpert, in which Getz's majestic tone is the only object of interest, as the melodies are rather forgettable. Far better are the straight-ahead renditions of old favorites like "On a Slow Boat to China," "Soul Eyes," and the dramatic interpretation of "Blood Count" (written by Billy Strayhorn as he lay dying of cancer in a hospital). Getz also was inspired by Barron's driving "Voyage" (a tune they frequently played together on tours during the leader's final years), and a duet with Barron of Benny Carter's elegant ballad "People Time." Getz's playing is first-rate throughout the show and he gives no indication ...
