(1 Customer Review)
12 Arrows is a 12-song program that showcases vocalist Judith Owen in trio form with drummer Herman Matthews and bassist Sean Hurley. Owen also performs two great duets -- one each with Richard Thompson and Julia Fordham. Owen plays piano and sings in a velvety alto voice that endears her listeners with tasteful simplicity. On "That Scares Me," the harmonious duet with Julia Fordham, she pulls you into the song and beautifully cultivates the life experience that many have felt but never expressed. This ballad is sung in a highly personal style that Owen's listeners can surely relate to. With family and friends often the subject matter, Owen expresses her writing talents and musical depth on 11 of the 12 songs. Having written all of the music and lyrics except for "Black Hole Sun," she illustrates the same sort of compassion, understanding, and poetic witticism in her storytelling as Carly Simon and Joni Mitchell have so brilliantly demonstrated with their music. Overall, 12 Arrows is a radical departure from Owen's last record, Limited Edition, but it is consistent with the same high standards set with by Owen's do-it-yourself work ethic. Top pick: "Some Arrows Go in Deep." ~ Paula Edelstein
Personnel: Judith Owen; Julia Fordham, Richard Thompson.

$19.69 Bong Joon-ho's THE HOST is a giddy revelation--an inspired and unexpectedly moving contribution to the monster movie genre. Several years ago, a crooked government official from the United States ordered the dumping of toxic substances into Seoul's Han River. Years later, the hapless Gang-du (Song Kang-ho) is working at his father's food stand along the river, caring for his bright daughter Hyun-seo (Ko A-sung). But one day, a monstrous creature emerges from the water and embarks on a murderous rampage throughout the community, swallowing Hyun-seo whole. Gang-du's bullish younger brother Park Nam-il (Park Hae-il) and sister Nam-joo (Bae Doo-na) condemn him for being such a failure, ...

$22.75 From its opening shot of Malcolm McDowell staring with evil intent directly into the camera (which pulls back to reveal him drinking a glass of milk), Stanley Kubrick's brilliant A CLOCKWORK ORANGE announces itself as a completely new kind of viewing experience. The film, set in an unidentified future, overwhelms the senses with its almost comic depictions of rape and violence set to an upbeat classical and pop music score. Kubrick based his chilling masterpiece on Anthony Burgess's culture-shaking novel about a young man growing into adulthood, but unable to shake his huge problem with authority figures. The first part of the film shows Alex (a career-defining performance by McDowell) and his "droogs" (his cohorts) ...

| | Gary Numan Replicas CDs (1979) Bonus Tracks; Reissue
12 Arrows
$10.29 REPLICAS contains six bonus tracks, which include outtakes and UK single B- sides.
Issued in 2008, this expanded edition of Gary Numan's groundbreaking 1979 synth-pop album, REPLICAS, presents an entire bonus disc of alternate takes and rarities, essentially revealing an early version of the classic Bowie-gone-robotic record. In addition to punchier renditions of "Me! I Disconnect from You" and "Are `Friends' Electric?" the second CD also includes excellent non-album tracks, most notably the coldly funky "Only a Downstat."
As early as 1977, English pop savant Gary Numan was crafting forward-looking new wave rock that was light years ahead of the punk being offered by his contemporaries. Bravely going against all current musical fashion, Numan blended science fiction themes and tales of urban paranoia into concise pop songs that combined Kraftwerk-like electronics with glam-era Bowie. REPLICAS, his second album, was his first recording to fully incorporate a synthesizer into the pop/punk guitar framework that he explored on his debut, TUBEWAY ARMY.
REPLICAS is the album on which Numan's reputation and retrospective acclaim is built. While it does not include "Cars" (that song was the highlight of his next album), REPLICAS is Numan's true masterpiece. In its reissued form, the album offers plentiful bonus tracks and extensive liner notes. Highlighted by the frosty pop and deliciously vintage analogue electronics of "Down in the Park" and "Are Friends Electric," REPLICAS is a nostalgic look at a rock future that never happened. It is also one of the few artifacts of the new wave era that sounds as fresh today as it did when it was first issued in the 1978.
By the release of their second album, Replicas, Gary Numan was the undisputed focal point and leader of icy electro-punkers Tubeway Army. And the move proved to be massively successful back home in the U.K., where both the album and the single "Are 'Friends' Electric?" topped the charts. The band had made a conscious effort to streamline the sound heard on its 1978 self-titled debut -- the distorted guitar riffs were played on Moog synthesizers instead, and Numan had perfected his faux-space-age persona. And the paranoia that is very evident in the lyrics and vocals on Numan's next release, ...
