The one-time doo-wop and rock-&-roll star Dion DiMucci has proved to be one of the most enduring of the genre's original pioneers, surviving numerous shifts in musical fashion over a career that has spanned six decades. This stripped-down Grammy-nominated production finds the singer going back to his pre-rock-&-roll roots, singing songs by Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon, and Hank Williams, among others, accompanied only by his own guitar and tasteful percussion. Since his doo wop beginnings in the 1950s, Dion has tried a number of different musical styles, including the rock & roll of his early-'60s solo work and his late-'60s folk-pop phase. He also played the blues, if less prominently (see for example the belatedly released Bronx Blues album), and he again tries the style here in what he bills as a return to his roots, to music he listened to on long-distance radio stations in his youth. Accompanying himself on one or more guitar tracks, and joined by a percussionist, he runs through a selection of blues standards that leans heavily on Robert Johnson, but also includes songs by Chicago blues stalwarts like Howlin' Wolf and even that country bluesman Hank Williams. Dion is an excellent guitarist, and his voice is in good shape. His approach is not exactly traditional; he throws in his own words to several songs, going on about the benefits of green tea in Lightnin' Hopkins' "You Better Watch Yourself," for example, and includes two originals, "I Let My Baby Do That" and "If You Wanna Rock & Roll." At the same time, the spare instrumentation gives the performances an authentic feel, and Bob Schnieders has been hired to write extensive liner notes detailing the sources of the songs, as if the album were an academic exercise. Dion isn't going to make anybody forget Blind Willie McTell or Jimmy Reed on this album, but his renditions are effectively and sincerely performed. ~ William RuhlmannEntertainment Weekly (p.84) - "With a voice that's retained much of the grainy warmth of his youth, DiMucci pumps new life into genre warhorses..." -- Grade: A- Uncut (p.74) - "[T]he Cash/Rubin-style back-to-basics approach is perfect for a still robust talent." Living Blues (pp.72-73) - "[H]e makes this project work by treating the material with feeling and never forgetting that the music is meant for dancing." Bronx In Blue Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Bronx In Blue is GOLD!!! Great effort by Dion!! Although it sounds different than the usual Dion album, the hardcore Dion fan will recognize the material as the things that he loved and influenced him in his youth. Dion is 60 plus years old now. His voice is still in prime condition. On these blues tracks, you can tell that what Dion sings is the real deal. Not some white guy trying to sing the blues. This is a must-have and Grammy-worthy album!! Submitted by RHVERNO (North Providence, RI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.

Yes! Just what I was looking for....a simple acoustic blues cd from a guy with a great voice. Don't let my use of the word, "simple" throw you off, I mean that as a compliment. If you're sick of over-produced "studio-fied" blues.... then this is your ticket out of Sissyville!! Man-up and get back to the basics with Dion, his voice, and his guitar. It is all you'll need. Dion's got the Blues This is a great little album.
Dion recorded it in two days with just him and his guitar, no overdubs or nuthin'.
It's all great old standards, real gems that he has taken to heart and, well, polished like the diamonds they are.
The whole thing has that "rock me like my back ain't got no bone" feeling - accessible and intimate and real. Every bit of it is mellow but still rocks out loud with that guitar-thumping beat going all the time.
I sincerely hope he does another one.

Recording information: Eden Studios; EMI Abbey Road Studios, London, England; Olympic Studios, London, England; T.W. Studios. Arranger: Buzzcocks. If Never Mind the Bollocks and London Calling are held up as punk masterpieces, then there's no question that Singles Going Steady belongs alongside them. In fact, the slew of astonishing seven-inches collected on Steady and their influence on future musicians - punk or otherwise -- sometimes even betters more famous efforts. The title and artwork alone (the latter itself partially inspired by the Beatles' Let it Be) have been parodied or referred to by Halo of Flies and Don Caballero, which titled its own singles comp Singles Breaking Up. As for the music, anybody who ever combined full-blast rock, catchy melodies and romantic and social anxieties owes something to what the classic quartet did here. The deservedly well-known masterpiece "Ever Fallen in Love" appears along with Love Bites' "Just Lust," but the remaining tracks originally appeared only as individual A and B-sides, making this collection all the more essential. The earlier numbers showcase a band bursting with energy and wicked humor - the ...
