| | Will Downing Classique CD (2009)
Shot X Shot
$14.39 Audio Mixers: Tip Wyman; Jeff Kaman; Ray Bardani. Audio Remasterer: Chris Gehringer. The title of Will Downing's 2009 effort, CLASSIQUE, produced by the artist and Rex Rideout, may be a bit misleading: it is not a compilation but a brand-spanking new collection of contemporary jazz-inflected R&B--in other words, classic Downing. The album's first single, "Something Special"--with its hand drums, loops, and slippery flute flitting around a well-placed, subtle horn section--is at its core a popping midtempo love song. Elsewhere, his cover of Barry White's "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little Bit More Baby" reveals just how deep the master's influence is on Downing. He may not have the full depth of White's baritone, but he gets close, and his expressiveness and emotional connection to the song make it shine. The completely old-school Marvin Gaye ballad "Baby I'm for Real" features a duet appearance by Phil Perry. It's convincing and utterly gorgeous. But not only do the covers work here; Downing's originals connect too--and not just the aforementioned single, but "Love Suggestions," "Ride," and "Let's Make It Now" also reveal the depth and breadth of Downing's songwriting. CLASSIQUE is indeed everything its title claims it is, and perhaps more. This is old-school urban R&B without a hint of nostalgia or pandering gimmickry. Will Downing has become an institution. Beginning with his self-titled debut in 1988, he has consistently cut singles and albums ...

| | Stan Getz Sweet Rain (Verve) CD (1967) (Import) Japan
Shot X Shot
$31.39 Personnel: Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Albert Daily (piano); Chick Corea (electric piano); Stanley Clarke, George Mraz (bass); Tony Williams, Billy Hart (drums). Principally recorded live at The Salle Wagram, New York, New York in November 1969. This 1967 date ranks among Stan Getz's finest. In addition to the iconic saxophonist's masterfully modulated style and classic cool tone, SWEET RAIN offers the unique opportunity to hear Getz play with a modern rhythm section that pushes the envelope, avant '60s-style. On this session, bassist Ron Carter, pianist Chick Corea, and drummer Grady Tate utilize near-free-jazz technique to situate Getz's playing in a highly fluid setting. The tracks list consists of two Corea originals, covers of tunes by Dizzy Gillespie and Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Mike Gibbs's gorgeous title tune. The level of interplay is at a high, kinetic crackle throughout, even--maybe especially--when the musicians make ample use of space. The 2008 reissue with remastered sound only improves what is already a jazz classic front to back. One of Stan Getz's all-time greatest albums, Sweet Rain was his first major artistic coup after he closed the book on his bossa nova period, featuring an adventurous young group that pushed him to new heights in his solo statements. Pianist Chick Corea, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Grady Tate were all schooled in '60s concepts of rhythm-section freedom, and their continually stimulating interplay helps open things up for Getz to embark on some long, soulful explorations (four of the five tracks are over seven minutes). The neat trick of Sweet Rain is that the advanced rhythm section work remains balanced with Getz's customary loveliness and lyricism. ...
