Uncertain as to whether the then-nascent CD market could sustain full reissues of the three-volume Friends and Relations series, Flicknife opted instead to compile the "best" of the three onto a single CD. Fourteen of the original 24 songs made it on and, while one can certainly question the decision that saw Robert Calvert's "Widow Song" and Nik Turner's "Man With the Golden Arm" numbered among the absentees, still the collection was far-reaching enough to satisfy most tastes. As expected, the highlights are those delivered by the artists closest to Hawkwind itself -- saxophonist Nik Turner's Inner City Unit turn in the tremendous "Raj Neesh," Dave Brock delivers "Motherless Children," while five tracks by Hawkwind themselves include the blinding "Valium Ten." ~ Dave Thompson
As befits any band with a career the length of Hawkwind's, the group has a family tree that is truly a marvel. From early bassist Thom Crimble's days in free festival favorites Skin Alley (the first rock band ever to be signed by Stax!) through Lemmy's Motörhead and Nik Turner's Sphinx, Simon House's days with Bowie and Simon King's with Quasar, Hawkwind has a familial finger in so many pies you could fill a baker's shop with them. All of which renders Friends & Relations a dreadfully disappointing trawl through a couple of branches you'd might never have even seen before. Igniting what, at the time of this album's original release, would become a dismaying plethora of collections built around rough live and studio cuts, four of the album's eight tracks are, indeed, rough live and studio cuts, all dating from that confused 1977-1978 period when various permutations of Hawkmen worked beneath such names as the Hawklords and the Sonic Assassins, while the lawyers tried to figure out who owned the actual band's name. "Valium Ten," one of the earliest manifestations of the Swindells/Bainbridge/Brock-led Hawks, is a worthy inclusion, but anybody brought up on the seismic ...

A side project of the Blood Brothers, Neon Blonde offers up a set of fierce and eclectic indie-rock songs on this outing.
Although Neon Blonde's Headlines EP showed that Johnny Whitney and Mark Gajadhar's side project could sound like the Blood Brothers while also sounding very little like them, it still wasn't adequate preparation for the crazed inventiveness of their full-length debut, Chandeliers in the Savannah. A glittering, sharp-edged magpie's nest of fractured glam, hip-hop, electronica, pop, Blood Brothers-style fury and whatever else caught the band's fancy, the album is an example of how to build something beautifully ugly out of trash. While Chandeliers in the Savannah's opening track, "Black Cactus Killers," could belong to the Blood Brothers, it quickly gets weirder and more eclectic from there, spanning the equally melodic and chaotic "Crystal Beaches Never Turned Me On" and the glammy, flamboyant piano ballad "Chandeliers and Vines" with blatant disregard for niceties like logic and continuity. Though tracks like "Princess Skullface Sings" lean towards danceppunk, the sound and approach are far more punk than dance, no matter how many drum machines and keyboards Neon Blonde tortured to make Chandeliers in the Savannah.
