Costumed Italian husband and wife duo Bruno and Stefania comprise the group Ovo, and kick up an uncompromising passel of electronics-damaged, dirge-ridden experimental rock on the album MIASTENIA. Veering sharply from punishing, snail's-pace beats to gut-wrenchingly precise metallic thrash, Ovo covers a great deal of difficult sonic terrain on MIASTENIA. Stefania in particular seems to relish the strangeness of what Ovo accomplish as an ensemble, her voice ranging from a piercing Yoko Ono-esque yodel to a gravelly chant. MIASTENIA is intense music for brave listeners.

Bay Area neo No-wave/dance-punkers Erase Errata returned as a trio on 2006's NIGHTLIFE, their third full-length album. Whiplashing, shredded guitar riffs and spiky rhythms give this album a furious post-punk sound, while the singing is forceful and clear. The songs are as political and topical as ever, touching on poverty, war, taxes, and the tendency to escape from these realities through entertainment. It is a serious album, but the mood is lightened considerably by how seriously fun these songs are.

On 23, Blonde Redhead's second full-length outing for 4AD, the New York City-based indie-rock trio, fronted by reedy-voiced singer/multi-instrumentalists Amedeo Pace and Kazu Makino (Simone Pace rounds out the line-up on drums), continues to refine the intense, artfully eccentric sound that it crafted on MISERY IS A BUTTERFLY. Although there are nods to the band's guitar-driven formative aesthetic (see the majestic title track and the searing "Spring and By Summer Fall"), even these more energetic moments carry a fascinating, dream-like quality, recalling the mesmerizing atmosphere of the Cure's DISINTEGRATION, while other tunes mix goth splendor with Beatlesque flourishes (as on the disarming "SW"). If modern day indie music appears to consist of an endless queue of groups that are either bland emo retreads or glitzy disco punkers, it is then that much more refreshing to encounter a band like Battles. With a lineage that consists of some of indie rock's most accomplished musicians, Battles is a veritable neo-prog supergroup, though one that embraces the possibilities of technology used in tandem with instrumental virtuosity.
MIRRORED, the band's debut full-length makes its intent clear from the onset--to ingest 50 years of rock history and regurgitate it as fractilized micro-symphonies. Rhythms bounce whimsically from motorik krautrock beats to glammed up T. Rex shuffles; such stop-on-a-dime surprises seem to be offered up at every turn. Tyondai Braxton's bizarre vocal gibberish--pitched up and looped in real-time--recalls similar experiments by the Animal Collective, while simple, repetitive note progressions give way to full-on guitar bombast (courtesy of Don Caballero's Ian Williams). But the Battles-plan cannot be reduced to mere quiet verse/loud chorus formula. Featuring a generous dose of improvisatory interplay, MIRRORED is tightrope-walking post-rock with a technology-driven edge.
